UPSC CSE Prelims (General Studies) Paper I Exam Pattern

 

The Prelims (General Studies) Paper I:

 

  • is awarded 200 marks in total.
  • has multiple-choice questions.
  • consists of 100 objective-type questions.
  • has a 2-hour allotment of time.
  • carries 2 marks for each question.
  • bears negative marks for incorrect answers. (0.83 marks, or one-third of the total marks allotted to that question, will be deducted for each incorrect answer.)
  • entails that no marks will be deducted if a question is skipped or not attempted.

 

It is a merit-based exam, and in order to advance to the next stage of the Civil Services Exam, an aspirant must clear the cutoff (at the discretion of the UPSC) of the Prelims General Studies Paper-I and also qualify the Prelims CSAT Paper II with 33% of the total marks.

  • History of India and Indian National Movement.
  • Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
  • Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
  • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialisation
