It is part of a bigger plan to improve trade between China and Latin American countries by creating a fast land-sea trade route.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Chancay Port<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Chancay Port Project<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a major new port developed in <\/span><b>Peru<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to improve trade between <\/span><b>China<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Latin America through a modern land-sea corridor.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is built under China\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bri\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a total investment of about <\/span><b>$3.6 billion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The port is capable of handling very large cargo ships, including vessels with a capacity of up to <\/span><b>18,000 TEUs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are among the largest in the world.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ownership of the port is mainly with <\/span><b>China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> holding <\/span><b>60% stake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while the remaining share belongs to a local Peruvian company.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The port is located in <\/span><b>Chancay<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about <\/span><b>78 km from Lima<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it close to the country\u2019s main economic center.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>natural deep-water port<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which allows large ships to dock easily without extensive dredging or modifications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The port acts as a <\/span><b>key trade gateway between <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/south-america\/\" target=\"_blank\">South America<\/a> and Asia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, helping in faster and more efficient movement of goods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It reduces shipping time and cost by providing a <\/span><b>direct route to Asia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, avoiding the need to pass through North American ports.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is expected to generate around <\/span><b>$4.5 billion annually<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Peru, contributing about <\/span><b>1.8% to its <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/gross-domestic-product-gdp\/\" target=\"_blank\">GDP<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will boost Peru\u2019s economy by increasing exports, creating jobs, and improving infrastructure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major exports handled through the port include <\/span><b>copper, blueberries, soybeans, and <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/lithium\/\" target=\"_blank\">lithium<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lithium will mainly come from the \u201clithium triangle\u201d countries: <\/span><b>Bolivia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Chile<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Argentina<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are rich in lithium reserves.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The port strengthens global supply chains, especially for important raw materials like lithium and copper used in modern industries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It increases China\u2019s economic and geopolitical presence in Latin America, a region
