


{"id":10006,"date":"2026-05-04T15:00:04","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T09:30:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=10006"},"modified":"2026-05-04T15:11:29","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T09:41:29","slug":"what-is-caricom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-caricom\/","title":{"rendered":"CARICOM"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>CARICOM Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The External Affairs Minister recently arrived in Kingston, Jamaica, at the start of his own nine-day visit to the Caribbean \u2018CARICOM\u2019 grouping of countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About CARICOM<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CARICOM, which stands for <\/span><b>Caribbean Community,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the <\/span><b>oldest surviving integration movement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the<\/span><b> developing world.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an <\/span><b>organization of Caribbean countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and dependencies originally established as the Caribbean Community and Commons Market in 1973 by the<\/span><b> Treaty of Chaguaramas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Main Purposes:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promote <\/span><b>economic integration and cooperation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">among its members;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To ensure that the <\/span><b>benefits of integration are equitably shared;<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <\/span><b>coordinate foreign policy;<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>replaced <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the former<\/span><b> Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which had become effective in 1968.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The treaty spurred the development of <\/span><b>associate institutions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including the <\/span><b>Caribbean Development Bank<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Organization of East Caribbean States<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both of which promote economic growth and cooperation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>In July 2001<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the heads of government <\/span><b>revised the Treaty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Chaguaramas, <\/span><b>establishing <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>Caribbean Community and the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which would harmonize economic policy and create a single currency.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>In 2007, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CARICOM officially inaugurated the <\/span><b>Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which serves as the<\/span><b> final court of appeal for CARICOM members<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and also <\/span><b>handles regional trade disputes.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Members<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has <\/span><b>15 members;<\/b> <b>Antigua and Barbuda,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><b>Bahamas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, <\/span><b>Guyana<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Haiti, <\/span><b>Jamaica<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, <\/span><b>Suriname<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Trinidad and Tobago.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 15, <\/span><b>all except Montserrat are nation-states.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, and Turks &amp;
