{"id":10102,"date":"2025-12-19T12:05:48","date_gmt":"2025-12-19T06:35:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=10102"},"modified":"2025-12-20T13:32:50","modified_gmt":"2025-12-20T08:02:50","slug":"what-is-white-spot-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-white-spot-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"White Spot Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>White Spot Disease Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India informed the Rajya\u00a0 Sabha about the white spot disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About White Spot Disease<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>highly contagious viral infection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that affects crustaceans such as <\/span><b>prawns, yabbies and crabs.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Causative Agent:\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is caused by a virus called as <\/span><b>White Spot Syndrome Virus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (WSSV). This is a double stranded DNA virus of the <\/span><b>genus Whispovirus and family Nimaviridae.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Host range:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> All decapod crustaceans (order Decapoda), including prawns, lobsters and crabs from marine, brackish or freshwater environments, are considered susceptible to infection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Symptoms:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The affected <\/span><b>shrimp exhibit anorexia, lethargy, reddish discoloration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and presence of circular white spots on the carapace and other exoskeletal parts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Transmission: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be <\/span><b>transmitted both horizontally as<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> well as vertically.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Vertical transmission<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It occurs from <\/span><b>infected brood stock to postlarvae<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Horizontal transmission:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is through <\/span><b>carrier animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or through cannibalism of infected organisms.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has been officially reported from Bangladesh, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2205544&amp;reg=3&amp;lang=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PIB<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>White Spot Disease is a highly contagious viral infection that affects crustaceans such as prawns, yabbies and crabs.
