He was the first Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India and helped preserve India\u2019s rich cultural heritage. His work greatly improved our understanding of India\u2019s ancient history.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Alexander Cunningham<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexander Cunningham was a <\/span><b>British army officer<\/b> <b>and archaeologist <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who is known as the <\/span><b>\u201cFather of Indian Archaeology.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He played a major role in studying and preserving India\u2019s ancient past.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was born on <\/span><b>23 January 1814 in London<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and joined the Bengal Engineers at a young age. He spent many years working in India and later retired as a <\/span><b>Major General in 1861.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His interest in Indian history began after meeting <\/span><b>James Prinsep,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who inspired him to study ancient coins, inscriptions, and historical sites.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cunningham carried out important excavations at places like <\/span><b>Sarnath and Sanchi,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which are major Buddhist sites. He carefully studied sculptures, monuments, and temple structures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also explored regions like <\/span><b>Kashmir and Ladakh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and wrote books such as The <\/span><b>Bhilsa Topes (1854),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which helped trace Buddhist history through monuments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In<\/span><b> 1861,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he became the <\/span><b>first Director-General of the <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/archaeological-survey-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">Archaeological Survey of India<\/a><\/strong><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Although the department was closed for some time, he returned when it was restarted in 1870 and continued his work for many years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his career, he travelled widely across northern India, <\/span><b>studying ancient ruins, inscriptions, and historical geography. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His book The <\/span><b>Ancient Geography of India (1871)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was one of his most important works.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also studied the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/edicts-of-ashoka\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>edicts of Ashoka<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and wrote about <\/span><b>important sites like Bharhut.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cunningham collected a <\/span><b>large number of ancient Indian coins,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> many of which were later kept in the <\/span><b>British Museum. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After retiring in <\/span><b>1885,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he focused mainly on studying coins (numismatics).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He helped identify many ancient sites mentioned by <\/span><b>Chinese travellers like Xuanzang. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also played a role in bringing attention to places like <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/indus-valley-civilization\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harappa<\/a>, which later became very important archaeological sites.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For his contributions, he was honoured with a <\/span><b>knighthood in 1887.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He passed away on <\/span><b>28 November 1893 in London.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, Cunningham\u2019s work laid the foundation for systematic archaeological research in India, and his reports and studies are still important for understanding India\u2019s ancient history.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>About Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Archaeological Survey of India is the main government organization <\/span><b>responsible for studying, protecting, and preserving<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> India\u2019s historical monuments and cultural heritage, helping us understand the country\u2019s ancient past in a better way.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was established in <\/span><b>1861 by Alexander Cunningham during the time of Lord Canning,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and later reorganised as a <\/span><b>separate department in 1871, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where <\/span><b>Cunningham is responsible for maintaining and preserving more than 3,600 protected monuments under the <\/span><b>Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:
