rights.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This turning point <\/span><b>stimulated trade unions <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and socialist federations <\/span><b>across Europe to declare May 1 an international day of workers\u2019 solidarity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, formally approved in 1889 at the Paris meeting of the Second International.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While International Labour Day commemorates events in the United States, both the <\/span><b>US and Canada observe Labour Day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the<\/span><b> first Monday of September,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> not May 1.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Over 80 countries, including India, Cuba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>China, mark ILD.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>In India,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>first Labour Day celebration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was held in <\/span><b>Chennai <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(then Madras) in <\/span><b>1923 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the <\/span><b>Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Malayapuram Singaravelu Chettia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r, the leader,<\/span><b> raised the red flag for the first time in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>demanded <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that the<\/span><b> government declare May 1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span><b>national holiday<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to recognise workers&#8217; rights.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day usually involves parades, union gatherings, and celebrations that emphasize employee rights.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>May Day 2026 Theme: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/international-labour-day\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Labour Organisation (ILO)<\/a><\/strong> selected the theme for May Day 2026 as: \u201c<\/span><b>Ensuring a Healthy Psychosocial Working Environment.&#8221;
