


{"id":10171,"date":"2024-04-30T10:20:59","date_gmt":"2024-04-30T04:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=10171"},"modified":"2025-03-29T17:47:17","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T12:17:17","slug":"taam-ja-blue-hole","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/taam-ja-blue-hole\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Taam Ja Blue Hole?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What is a Blue Hole?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Blue holes are <strong>water-filled vertical caverns<\/strong>, <strong>or sinkholes<\/strong>, found <strong>in coastal regions where<\/strong> the <strong>bedrock is made of soluble material<\/strong>, such as limestone, marble, or gypsum.<\/li>\n<li>They <strong>form when water<\/strong> on the surface <strong>percolates through the rock<\/strong>, <strong>dissolving minerals<\/strong> and <strong>widening cracks<\/strong>, which eventually <strong>causes the rock to collapse<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Famous <strong>examples<\/strong> include <strong>Dean&#8217;s Blue Hole <\/strong>in the <strong>Bahamas<\/strong>, the <strong>Dahab Blue Hole<\/strong> in <strong>Egypt,<\/strong> and the <strong>Great Blue Hole in Belize<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About Taam Ja&#8217; Blue Hole:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the <strong>deepest<\/strong> known <strong>underwater sinkhole<\/strong> in the world.<\/li>\n<li>It sits in <strong>Chetumal Bay<\/strong> off the <strong>southeast coast<\/strong> of the <strong>Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It extends at least 1,380 feet (420 meters) below sea level.\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>It is 390 feet (119 m) deeper than the <strong>previous record holder<\/strong> \u2014 the 990-foot-deep (301 m) <strong>Sansha Yongle Blue Hole<\/strong>, also known as the <strong>Dragon Hole<\/strong>, in the <strong>South China Sea.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Spread over an area of 13,660 square meters, the giant, underwater cavern has been named Taam Ja\u2019 which means &#8220;deep water&#8221; in Mayan.<\/li>\n<li>The submerged blue hole has a <strong>nearly circular shape at its surface<\/strong> with <strong>steep sides<\/strong> that form a large conic structure <strong>covered by biofilms, sediments, limestone<\/strong>, and <strong>gypsum ledges.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key facts about Yucatan Peninsula:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>northeastern projection of Central America<\/strong>, extending into the Atlantic Ocean.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Gulf of Mexicolies<\/strong> on its <strong>western and northern sides<\/strong>.
