


{"id":10175,"date":"2025-04-26T05:49:26","date_gmt":"2025-04-26T00:19:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=10175"},"modified":"2025-05-28T16:12:34","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T10:42:34","slug":"what-is-zero-shadow-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-zero-shadow-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Zero Shadow Day (ZSD)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Zero Shadow Day Latest News<\/h2>\n<p>The Cosmology Education and Research Training Center (COSMOS), Mysuru, of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics recently observed \u2018Zero Shadow Day\u2019.<\/p>\n<h2>About Zero Shadow Day<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an interesting\u00a0<strong>celestial phenomenon\u00a0<\/strong>that occurs\u00a0<strong>twice in a year<\/strong>\u00a0when the\u00a0<strong>sun is directly overhead<\/strong>\u00a0and thus<strong>\u00a0no shadow of any vertical object can be seen.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This event happens\u00a0<strong>for locations<\/strong>\u00a0situated\u00a0<strong>between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The ZSD phenomenon transpires\u00a0<strong>when the Sun&#8217;s declination becomes equal to the latitude of the location.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>On this day, as the sun crosses the local meridian, its rays fall exactly vertically relative to an object on the ground, making it impossible to observe any shadow of that object.<\/li>\n<li>This is\u00a0<strong>due to the tilt of the Earth&#8217;s axis and its rotation around the sun, causing\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0<strong>angle of the sun&#8217;s rays to change throughout the year,\u00a0<\/strong>which in turn\u00a0<strong>affects the lengths and directions of shadows.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>When does it occur?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>There are\u00a0<strong>two zero shadow days every year,<\/strong>\u00a0observed in placesthat lie\u00a0<strong>between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>One falls during the Uttarayan\u00a0<\/strong>(when the\u00a0<strong>Sun moves northwards<\/strong>), and the other is during\u00a0<strong>Dakshinayan (<\/strong>when the<strong>\u00a0Sun moves southwards).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It will clearly be\u00a0<strong>different for different places<\/strong>\u00a0on earth.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0<strong>lasts for a small part of a second<\/strong>, but the\u00a0<strong>effect can be seen for a minute<\/strong>\u00a0to a minute-and-a-half.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>southern part of India,<\/strong>\u00a0roughly\u00a0<strong>below the latitude of Bhopa<\/strong>l, will\u00a0<strong>experience the ZSD.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The states that can see this event are Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Goa, Maharashtra, Odisha, Daman &amp;
