text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>semi-enclosed inland sea of the Atlantic Ocean,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> situated in <\/span><b>Northern Europe.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>extends northward from southern Denmark to<\/b> <b>within a few degrees latitude o<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f the <\/span><b>Arctic Circle, separating the Scandinavian Peninsula from continental Europe.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>To the east,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the<\/span><b> White Sea-Baltic Canal, opened by Russia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1993, allows <\/span><b>traffic from the Baltic\u2014via the Gulf of Finland <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and a chain of rivers and major lakes\u2014<\/span><b>to the White Sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, itself an<\/span><b> arm of the Arctic Ocean.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To the <\/span><b>southwest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>Kiel Canal, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opened in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1895<\/span><b>, cuts through the Jutland peninsula to connect the Baltic with the North Sea.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>youngest sea on our planet,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emerging some 10,000-15,000 years ago as the glaciers retreated at the end of the last Ice Age.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is approximately 1,600 km long and 193 km wide, covering an area of approximately 377,000 sq.km.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Surrounding Countries:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It has a coastline of approximately 8,000 km, shared by several countries, including <\/span><b>Sweden, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland, Estonia, Germany, Denmark, and Russia.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is often cited as the<\/span><b> world\u2019s largest brackish inland water body.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its water<\/span><b> salinity levels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are<\/span><b> lower than that of the world oceans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to the inflow of fresh water from the surrounding land and the sea\u2019s shallowness.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are about <\/span><b>sixty rivers draining<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into the Baltic Sea. <\/span><b>Neva is the larges<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t river that drains into the Baltic Sea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Islands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It is home to over 20 islands and archipelagos. <\/span><b>Gotland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, located off the coast of <\/span><b>Sweden<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is the <\/span><b>largest island<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Baltic Sea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
