River.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Importance<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Sanchi is a<strong> religious place<\/strong> with historical and Archaeological significance.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>has India\u2019s best-preserved group of Buddhist monuments<\/strong>, collectively <strong>designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1989.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Buddhist Monuments at Sanchi?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The site of Sanchi comprises a <strong>group of Buddhist monuments <\/strong>(monolithic pillars, palaces, temples and monasteries), all in different states of conservation, <strong>most of which date back to the 2nd and 1st centuries B.C.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>oldest Buddhist sanctuary in existence<\/strong> and was a <strong>major Buddhist centre in India until the 12th century<\/strong> A.D.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The most prominent<\/strong> stupa found here <strong>is the Sanchi Stupa<\/strong>, also known as the Great Stupa.<\/li>\n<li>Other remains at the site include <strong>several smaller stupas<\/strong>, an <strong>assembly hall (chaitya), an Ashokan pillar<\/strong> with inscriptions, and s<strong>everal monasteries<\/strong> (4th\u201311th century CE).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Key Facts about Sanchi Stupa:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It was <strong>built by<\/strong> the Mauryan emperor <strong>Ashoka in the third century BC.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It <strong>enshrines religious relics<\/strong> or remains <strong>of the Buddha and his most revered disciples.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Structure<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It is <strong>enclosed by a massive stone railing pierced by four gateways,<\/strong> which are adorned <strong>withelaborate carvings <\/strong>(known as Sanchi sculpture).<\/li>\n<li>The stupa itself <strong>consists of a base bearing a hemispherical dome<\/strong> (anda), symbolizing the dome of heaven enclosing the earth.<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>surmounted by a squared rail unit (harmika)<\/strong> representing the world mountain, from which rises a mast (yashti), symbolizing the cosmic
