To transform select institutions into world-class centres of teaching and research, the Government of India launched the Institutions of Eminence Scheme.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Institutions of Eminence Scheme<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Institutions of Eminence Scheme is a higher education reform initiative <\/span><b>launched by the University Grants <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commission in <\/span><b>2017<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to develop world-class educational institutions in India.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scheme was first <\/span><b>announced in the Union Budget 2016.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Institutions of Eminence (IoE) recognition status was formally set up in 2017 by the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/university-grants-commission\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>University Grants Commission<\/strong><\/a> (UGC).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>aims to establish 20 globally competitive institutions in the country, including 10 public and 10 private institutions.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the scheme, selected institutions are granted the status of \u201cInstitution of Eminence\u201d. These institutes are <\/span><b>granted greater academic, administrative, and financial autonomy to improve their global ranking and research capabilities.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Funding: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public institutions receive a grant of up to \u20b91,000 crore; no funding is awarded to private institutions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Regulatory framework<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: UGC (Declaration of Government Institutions as Institutions of Eminence) Guidelines, 2017 for public institutions; UGC (IoE Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2017 for private institutions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scheme required institutions selected under the initiative to obtain accreditation within five years of notification.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scheme includes a <\/span><b>greenfield category<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for new institutions that are yet to become operational. Greenfield institutions are given three years to establish themselves before final consideration for Institution of Eminence status.
