Following this, the Integrated Child Development Services scheme was launched in 1975.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme implemented by the <\/span><b>Ministry of Women and Child Development.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scheme <\/span><b>seeks to break the intergenerational cycle of malnutrition and poor health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by providing nutrition, healthcare, and early education at the community level.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICDS adopts an <\/span><b>integrated approach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> covering Child nutrition, Maternal health, Early childhood education, Immunisation, Health care and Community awareness.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Target Beneficiaries: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scheme primarily serves three categories of beneficiaries:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children aged 0-6 years \u2014 the most critical window for cognitive, physical, and emotional development<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant women \u2014 for antenatal nutrition and health care<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lactating mothers \u2014 for postnatal care and breastfeeding support<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urban slums are also a priority area of the programme, in addition to rural and tribal areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Anganwadi Centre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the main service delivery institution under ICDS.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Objectives of Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ICDS scheme aims to improve the health, nutrition, and overall development of children and mothers.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Improving Child Nutrition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The scheme seeks to reduce malnutrition, stunting, wasting, and underweight prevalence among children.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reducing Child Mortality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: ICDS aims to reduce infant mortality, child mortality, disease burden, and nutritional deficiencies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Promoting Early Childhood Development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The programme provides early childhood care and pre-school education for the physical, mental, and emotional development of children.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Improving Maternal Health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Pregnant women and lactating mothers receive nutrition support and healthcare awareness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reducing School Dropouts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Pre-school education at Anganwadi Centres helps children prepare for formal schooling.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Services provided under Integrated Child Development Services Programme<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The ICDS delivers an integrated package of six services through Anganwadi Centres:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Supplementary Nutrition (SNP):\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For nutritional purposes, ICDS provides 500 kilocalories (with 12\u201315 grams of protein) every day to every child from 6 months to 6 years of age.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For adolescent girls in the age group of 10 to 19, 6 kilograms of food grain is given every month.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malnourished children receive enhanced nutrition of 600 calories and 16-20 grams of protein per day.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Pre-school Non-Formal Education (PSE): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children aged 3-6 years receive early childhood care and education (ECCE) at the Anganwadi centre. This prepares them for formal schooling, reducing school dropout rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Nutrition and Health Education (NHE): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mothers and women aged 15-45 years receive guidance on child care, nutrition, health, hygiene, and family welfare.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Immunisation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anganwadi Workers (AWWs) help organise fixed-day immunisation sessions. The Primary Health Centre (PHC) and its infrastructure carry out immunisation of infants and expectant mothers as per the national schedule. AWWs assist in the exercise, maintain records, and follow up to ensure complete coverage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Health Check-up: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health check-up activity includes care of all children below 6 years, antenatal care of pregnant women and postnatal care of lactating mothers.
