It aims to prevent discrimination against the girl child and promote gender equality in society. The Act also regulates the use of diagnostic techniques to ensure they are used only for medical purposes and not for determining the sex of the fetus.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About PCPNDT Act<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a law made in India to stop the <\/span><b>practice of sex selection and female foeticide.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It was introduced because the sex ratio in India was continuously declining, showing discrimination against the girl child.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main aim of this Act is to <\/span><b>ban the use of techniques that determine the sex of a baby,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> either before or after conception, and to prevent the misuse of medical technologies for sex-selective abortions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initially, it was known as the <\/span><b>PNDT Act (1994),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but later it was amended in <\/span><b>2003 to include Pre-Conception techniques<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well, and since then it is called the <\/span><b>PCPNDT Act.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>2003 amendment also brought ultrasound technology under strict regulation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and strengthened the law by creating Central and State Supervisory Boards to monitor its implementation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even before this national law, <\/span><b>the state of Maharashtra had taken the lead by banning pre-natal sex discrimination.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>PCPNDT Act Key Provisions<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Act allows the use of techniques like <\/span><b>ultrasound and amniocentesis only for medical reasons, such as detecting genetic or congenital disorders.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It clearly states that <\/span><b>no clinic, laboratory, or centre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can conduct tests to <\/span><b>determine the sex of the foetus.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also <\/span><b>prohibits communicating the sex of the foetus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the pregnant woman or her family, whether through words, signs, or any other method.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Act <\/span><b>bans all forms of advertisements related to sex determination, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whether in print, electronic media, or public displays.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any violation, such as advertising or promoting sex determination services, <\/span><b>can lead to imprisonment up to 3 years and a fine.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It makes it mandatory for all diagnostic centres, genetic clinics, and ultrasound
