(1947-48) Background<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The background of the Indo-Pak War of 1947\u20131948 was mainly linked to the <\/span><b>Partition of British India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the dispute over <\/span><b>Jammu and Kashmir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after independence in <\/span><b>1947<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were given the option to join either <\/span><b>India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>Pakistan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Jammu and Kashmir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was ruled by <\/span><b>Maharaja Hari Singh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who initially wanted to remain independent.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kashmir had a 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the <\/span><b>Instrument of Accession<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Indian troops<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: <\/span><b>Instrument of Accession<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, officially joining <\/span><b>Jammu and Kashmir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On <\/span><b>27 October 1947<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>Indian Army<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> airlifted troops to <\/span><b>Srinagar Airport<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, marking the formal beginning of India\u2019s military operation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Battle of Srinagar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became a major turning point as Indian forces successfully defended the city from invading forces.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian troops recaptured important towns such as
