{"id":10375,"date":"2023-05-04T08:17:16","date_gmt":"2023-05-04T02:47:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=10375"},"modified":"2025-03-29T19:53:31","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T14:23:31","slug":"tawang-monastery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/tawang-monastery\/","title":{"rendered":"Tawang Monastery"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Tawang Monastery:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It is located in the <strong>Tawang district in Arunachal Pradesh<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is situated <strong>on a mountain<\/strong> in the town of Tawang <strong>at an altitude of over 3000 m<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>largest monastery in India and the second largest in the world<\/strong> <strong>after the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>known in Tibetan as GaldenNamgeyLhatse<\/strong>, which translates to &#8220;<strong>celestial paradise in a clear night<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>founded by Merak Lama LodreGyatso in 1680-1681<\/strong> in accordance with the <strong>wishes of the 5th Dalai Lama, NgawangLobsangGyatso<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It belongs to the <strong>Gelug school of Mahayana Buddhism<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Structure<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The monastery is <strong>three stories high<\/strong> and is enclosed by a <strong>282 m-long compound wall.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>8 m high gilded statue of Lord Buddha<\/strong> dominates the sanctum.<\/li>\n<li>It has a <strong>residential building<\/strong> for the monks, <strong>a library<\/strong>, a <strong>museum<\/strong> and a <strong>school<\/strong> for basic education.<\/li>\n<li>The monastery has <strong>many ancient scriptures, including the Kangyur<\/strong>, a <strong>collection of the teachings of the Buddha<\/strong>, and the <strong>Tengyur, a collection of commentaries on the teachings of the Buddha.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Gelug school of Mahayana Buddhism:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The Gelug or Gelug-pa, also <strong>known as the Yellow Hat sect, is the newest<\/strong> of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism.<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>founded by Je Tsongkhapa (1357\u20131419<\/strong>), a Tibetan philosopher, tantric yogi and lama, and further expanded and developed by his disciples<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>emerged as the pre-eminent Buddhist school in Tibet<\/strong> since the end of the 16th century.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Dalai Lamas are often mostly associated with this school<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Ganden Tripa (&#8220;Ganden Throne Holder&#8221;) is the official head<\/strong> of the school, though its <strong>most influential figure is the Dalai Lama<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Gelug school placed special <strong>emphasis on monastic training and study<\/strong>, as well as practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is Mahayana Buddhism?<\/h3>\n<p>Mahayana Buddhism is the largest Buddhist sect in the world, and its beliefs and practices are what most non-adherents recognize as &#8220;Buddhism&#8221; in the modern era.
