As a result, the Nawab, with British support, attacked them. The Rohillas were defeated, and their region came under the control of Awadh. This war is often seen as an example of how the British started interfering in Indian politics for their own benefit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Rohillas<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Rohillas were Afghan (Pashtun) settlers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who migrated to India in the early 18th century during the decline of the Mughal Empire, when central authority had weakened and many regional powers were emerging.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They settled in a fertile and strategically important region in present-day Uttar Pradesh, which later came to be known as Rohilkhand, covering areas like Bareilly, Rampur, and nearby regions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, the<\/span><b> Rohillas became powerful chiefs <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and established their own independent rule, taking advantage of the <\/span><b>weakening Mughal control.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their society was organized under various leaders, among whom <\/span><b>Hafiz Rahmat Khan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the most prominent and influential during the time of the Rohilla War.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Rohilla War Background<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> 18th century in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a period of political instability marked by the <\/span><b>decline of the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/mughal-empire\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Mughal Empire<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the rise of regional powers such as the Marathas, Nawabs, and various Afghan groups like the Rohillas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> Marathas were expanding rapidly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into northern India, posing a serious threat to smaller regional powers, including the <\/span><b>Rohillas of Rohilkhand.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Nawab of Awadh, Shuja-ud-Daula,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was also trying to expand his territory and strengthen his political position in the region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The British East India Company, after gaining power in Bengal, was looking for opportunities to extend its influence into other parts of India by forming alliances and intervening in regional disputes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Rohilla War Immediate Causes<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rohillas, feeling threatened by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/maratha-empire\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Marathas<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sought military help from Shuja-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awadh, to protect their territory.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>A formal agreement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was made in which the Nawab agreed to help the Rohillas fight against the Marathas in return for a payment of Rs. 40 lakhs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nawab fulfilled his part of the agreement by helping the Rohillas successfully defend against the Maratha threat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, after the Marathas were driven away, the<\/span><b> Rohillas failed to pay the promised amount.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This refusal was seen by the Nawab as a breach of trust and provided him with a justification to attack Rohilkhand.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Role and Motives of the British<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/warren-hastings\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Warren Hastings<\/b><\/a><b>, the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/governors-generals-of-bengal-and-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Governor-General of Bengal<\/b><\/a><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> agreed to support the Nawab of Awadh by providing British troops for the campaign against the Rohillas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/british-east-india-company\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>British East India Company<\/b><\/a><b> was paid a large sum of money<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in return for supplying military assistance, showing that their involvement was driven by financial motives.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from money, the British had strategic reasons for supporting Awadh, as they wanted to <\/span><b>create a strong buffer state<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between their territories and the expanding Maratha power.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supporting the Nawab also allowed the British to increase their influence over Awadh and gradually bring it under their control.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This decision later became controversial, as critics argued that the British were essentially<\/span><b> \u201cselling\u201d their army for profit <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and interfering in matters that did not directly concern them.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Rohilla War Course<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In early <\/span><b>1774, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the combined forces of the <\/span><b>Nawab of Awadh and the British East India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Company marched into Rohilkhand to attack the Rohillas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rohilla forces, led by <\/span><b>Hafiz Rahmat Khan,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prepared to defend their territory but were at a disadvantage compared to the well-organized and better-equipped combined army.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decisive battle took place at <\/span><b>Miranpur Katra in April 1774, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where intense fighting occurred between the two sides.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the battle, <\/span><b>Hafiz Rahmat Khan was killed,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which severely weakened the morale and leadership of the Rohilla forces.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After this turning point, the Rohilla resistance collapsed, leading to their complete defeat.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Rohilla War Consequences<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the defeat, most of <\/span><b>Rohilkhand was annexed by the Nawab of Awadh,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> significantly increasing his territory and power.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A large number of <\/span><b>Rohillas were forced to flee their homeland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and cross the Ganges River, leading to displacement and suffering.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The British later intervened again and <\/span><b>established a small Rohilla state at Rampur<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a dependent or <\/span><b>\u201cprotected\u201d state.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Faizullah Khan, a Rohilla chief, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was recognized as the <\/span><b>Nawab of Rampur<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under British supervision, ensuring that the region remained under indirect British control.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Second Rohilla War (1794)<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the death of Faizullah Khan in 1793, a succession dispute broke out among his heirs regarding who would rule Rampur.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This internal conflict provided another opportunity for British intervention in the region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1794,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the British fought against the Rohillas again and defeated them, further strengthening their authority and control over the region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This second conflict confirmed the declining power of the Rohillas and the increasing dominance of the British in northern India.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Criticism and Impeachment of Warren Hastings<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warren Hastings faced strong criticism in Britain for his role in the Rohilla War, especially for allowing <\/span><b>British troops to be used in what was seen as an unjust and profit-driven conflict.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His critics accused him of supporting the Nawab of Awadh purely for money and ignoring the suffering of the Rohillas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These actions became part of the charges during his <\/span><b>impeachment trial in the British Parliament.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the trial lasted several years and included serious allegations, Hastings was eventually acquitted and declared not guilty.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Rohilla War Significance<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rohilla War marked an <\/span><b>important stage in the expansion of British political and military influence in India, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as it showed their willingness to interfere in regional conflicts for their own benefit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It demonstrated the British strategy of using alliances with Indian rulers to gradually gain control over territories without direct conquest initially.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The war strengthened Awadh in the short term but also made it more dependent on British
