


{"id":10423,"date":"2023-05-07T07:00:59","date_gmt":"2023-05-07T01:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=10423"},"modified":"2025-03-29T20:11:13","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T14:41:13","slug":"what-is-ins-magar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-ins-magar\/","title":{"rendered":"What is INS Magar?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>\u00a0<strong>About INS Magar:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the <strong>oldest Landing Ship Tank (Large) of the Indian Navy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>lead ship of Magar-class amphibious warfare vessels<\/strong> of the Indian Navy.<\/li>\n<li>The ship was <strong>indigenously built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders<\/strong> &amp; Engineers Ltd, <strong>Kolkata<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It had the unique distinction of being the <strong>first indigenous ship of the Indian Navy<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>She was launched on 16 November 1984 and <strong>commissioned into the Indian Navy on 18 July 1987<\/strong> by late Admiral R H Tahiliani.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It has been <strong>named after a species of crocodile<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>crest design depicts a Brown coloured crocodile <\/strong>with its mouth open swimming over White and Blue ocean waves.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The aft portion of the crest shows<\/strong> a cut out of the thick and impenetrable <strong>armour like skin of the crocodile<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>design<\/strong> has been <strong>taken from a Mathura sculpture of 1st Century AD<\/strong>, preserved in original in the Lucknow museum.<\/li>\n<li>The ship has <strong>a displacement of 5,600 tonnes<\/strong>, <strong>a length of 125 metres<\/strong>, <strong>a beam of 17 metres<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>During its service, Magar has <strong>participated in numerous operations<\/strong>, amphibious exercises, and humanitarian missions, noteworthy of them being <strong>Operation Samudra Setu<\/strong> wherein over 4,000 Indian nationals were repatriated from various corners of the world during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/li>\n<li>The ship was also <strong>instrumental in the evacuation of over 1,300 survivors post the tsunami in 2004<\/strong> and had been part of several <strong>joint military exercises<\/strong> with the Indian Army.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is a Landing Ship Tank?<\/h3>\n<p>The Landing Ship Tank is an ocean going ship capable of shore to shore delivery of tanks, amphibious assault vehicles, and troops.
