They were formed to support and protect the ruling authority and its interests during a period of political uncertainty and change.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Razakars<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Razakars were a <\/span><b>volunteer paramilitary group<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> formed in <\/span><b>1971 during the time of the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bangladesh-liberation-war-1971\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Bangladesh Liberation War<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word<\/span><b> \u201cRazakar\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means<\/span><b> volunteer or helper, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but later it came to be associated with collaborators in Bangladesh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were created by the <\/span><b>Pakistani military to get local support in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most Razakars were <\/span><b>Urdu-speaking migrants (Biharis),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along with some <\/span><b>Pro-Pakistani Bengalis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who opposed the separation of East Pakistan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many members were linked to<\/span><b> religious and political groups<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, they were <\/span><b>trained and organised into groups like Al-Badr and Al-Shams<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to assist the army more effectively.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their knowledge of <\/span><b>local language, people, and geography<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made them useful for military operations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Razakars in Bangladesh Liberation War<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Razakars worked closely with the Pakistani army to <\/span><b>control the rebellion in East Pakistan.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They helped in<\/span><b> identifying, tracking, and targeting local people, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially those supporting independence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were involved in <\/span><b>raids, arrests, and intelligence gathering, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acting as guides for the army.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many reports and accounts accuse them of being involved in <\/span><b>serious human rights violations,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including violence against civilians.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are often linked to the <\/span><b>killing of intellectuals, journalists, and professionals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> towards the end of the war.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their actions contributed to the <\/span><b>fear and suffering of the local population during the conflict.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Bangladesh became independent in 1971, many Razakars were seen as <\/span><b>collaborators and faced backlash, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while some fled or later became part of political 1971<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><b>Razakar Post-War Fate in Bangladesh<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Bangladesh became independent in <\/span><b>December 1971,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the new government took strong steps <\/span><b>against those who had supported the Pakistani forces.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organizations that were seen as collaborators, such as <\/span><b>Jamaat-e-Islami, were banned, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and many of their leaders fled to Pakistan to avoid action.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1972, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the government introduced the <\/span><b>Bangladesh Collaborators (Special Tribunals)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Order to identify and try people accused of helping the Pakistani military.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1973,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the leadership of <\/span><b>Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the International Crimes (Tribunal) Act<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was passed to investigate and punish war crimes committed during the conflict.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These steps were taken <\/span><b>to ensure justice
