The decision was published in The Lancet and presented at the European Congress of Endocrinology in Prague.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About PCOS<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the <\/span><b>most common hormonal disorders<\/b> <b>affecting women of reproductive age.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It occurs when the <\/span><b>ovaries produce excess androgens<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are male-type hormones normally present in small amounts in women.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This hormonal imbalance disrupts the normal functioning of the ovaries and <\/span><b>affects ovulation, menstruation, metabolism and overall reproductive health.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a normal menstrual cycle, several follicles begin developing inside the ovaries, but only one follicle matures completely and releases an egg during ovulation. However, experts now clarify that these are not true cysts but \u201carrested follicles.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The condition is commonly associated with <\/span><b>irregular menstrual cycles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>difficulty in ovulation, infertility, weight gain, acne and excessive facial or body hair growth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many women also experience thinning of scalp hair, darkening of skin folds and difficulty in losing weight.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>exact cause of PCOS is still not fully known<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but experts believe that genetics, insulin resistance, hormonal imbalance, obesity, unhealthy diet, stress and sedentary lifestyle play an important role in its development.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Why was PCOS Renamed as PMOS?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) was renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) in 2026 because experts believed the <\/span><b>old name was medically misleading and failed to reflect the true nature of the disorder.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term \u201cPCOS\u201d focused mainly on ovarian cysts, even though many women with the condition do not actually have cysts. The small structures seen on ultrasound are usually immature or arrested follicles, not true cysts. As a result, <\/span><b>many women were misdiagnosed or diagnosed late.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts also found that PCOS is <\/span><b>not only a reproductive disorder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is a <\/span><b>multisystem condition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affecting the endocrine, metabolic, psychological and cardiovascular systems. <\/span><b>Women with PCOS face a higher risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/type-2-diabetes-t2d\/\" target=\"_blank\">Type 2 diabetes<\/a>, obesity, hypertension, fatty liver disease, heart disease, anxiety and depression<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if the condition remains unmanaged for a long time. Management mainly focuses on controlling symptoms, improving hormonal balance and reducing long-term metabolic risks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment usually includes regular physical activity, weight management, balanced nutrition, proper sleep and stress reduction. Doctors may also prescribe hormonal therapy and insulin-sensitising medicines such as Metformin when required.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Significance of Renaming PCOS as PMOS<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The renaming of PCOS to PMOS shows a <\/span><b>better medical understanding of the disorder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
