


{"id":104620,"date":"2026-05-22T18:01:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T12:31:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=104620"},"modified":"2026-05-22T18:01:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T12:31:13","slug":"veera-pasi-the-forgotten-hero-of-the-1857-revolt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/veera-pasi-the-forgotten-hero-of-the-1857-revolt\/","title":{"rendered":"Veera Pasi, the Forgotten Hero of the 1857 Revolt, Role, Legacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi unveiled a statue of Veera Pasi, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a \u201cforgotten hero\u201d who had fought the British during the Revolt of 1857, in Raebareli.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Veera Pasi<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veera Pasi was a <\/span><b>Dalit freedom fighter <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">belonging to the <\/span><b>Pasi community<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><b>present-day Raebareli district in Uttar Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was <\/span><b>born on 11 November 1835<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Lodhwari village into a poor family and lost his parents at an early age.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After losing his parents, he went to live with his sister\u2019s family. In the local dialect, a man living in his sister\u2019s house was called \u201cVeerna\u201d, which later evolved into the name<\/span><b> \u201cVeera\u201d.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veera Pasi became a <\/span><b>trusted commander and close associate of Rana Beni Madhav Baksh Singh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>ruler of the Shankarpur Estate in Awadh during the 19th century.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impressed by his physical strength and bravery, Rana Beni Madhav recruited him into his army, where he emerged as one of his most loyal lieutenants.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Veera Pasi Role in the Revolt of 1857<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veera Pasi <\/span><b>actively participated in the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/revolt-of-1857\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Revolt of 1857<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against British rule in the <\/span><b>Awadh region.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to local folklore, when the British captured Rana Beni Madhav Baksh Singh, Veera Pasi displayed exceptional courage by rescuing him from British custody.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His resistance against the <\/span><b>British<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became so significant that the colonial administration announced a <\/span><b>reward of \u20b950,000 for information regarding his capture.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral traditions suggest that <\/span><b>Veera Pasi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> later <\/span><b>died while attempting to protect Rana Beni Madhav Singh from British forces.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although mainstream historical records contain limited references to him, his legacy has survived through folk memory and oral traditions in Raebareli and nearby regions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Why is Veera Pasi Called a Forgotten Hero?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veera Pasi is <\/span><b>called a \u201cforgotten hero\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because <\/span><b>his contribution to the Revolt of 1857 received very limited recognition in mainstream historical writings despite his role in resisting British rule.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colonial and elite-centric historiography often focused mainly on prominent figures such as <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mangal-pandey\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mangal Pandey<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/jhansi-rani-lakshmibai\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rani Lakshmibai<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bahadur-shah-zafar\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Bahadur Shah Zafar<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while the contributions of Dalits, peasants, Adivasis, and other marginalised communities remained largely neglected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to Uda Devi and Maharaja Bijli Pasi, Veera Pasi\u2019s legacy survived mainly through folk songs, oral traditions, and community memory rather than written historical record.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Veera Pasi was a Dalit freedom fighter of the 1857 Revolt in Awadh.
