She was the daughter of Lakhuji Jadhav and Mahalasabai Jadhav and became the mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, founder of the Maratha Empire. Rajmata Jijau played a major role in shaping Shivaji\u2019s vision of Hindavi Swarajya through strong values, military training, administration and cultural teachings rooted in Indian traditions and epics.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Rajmata Jijau Biography<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajmata Jijau\u2019s life reflected leadership, courage and administrative ability during the rise of the Maratha power in western India.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajmata Jijau was born on 12 January 1598 at Jijau Mahal in Sindkhed Raja of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate in present day Buldhana district of Maharashtra.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She belonged to the Jadhav dynasty claiming Yadava ancestry and was daughter of Lakhuji Jadhav and Mahalasabai Jadhav.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jijabai married Shahaji Bhosle, son of Maloji Bhosle of Verul village, at a young age. Shahaji served the Nizam Shahi rulers and later became an influential Maratha military leader in the Deccan region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajmata Jijau became mother of Shivaji Bhonsale I, later known as <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/chhatrapati-shivaji-maharaj\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj<\/strong><\/a>. She educated him through stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata and inspired ideals of bravery, justice and swarajya.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajmata Jijau died on 17 June 1674 at Pachad village near Raigad Fort, only twelve days after Shivaji Maharaj\u2019s coronation as Chhatrapati of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/maratha-empire\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Maratha Empire<\/strong><\/a> at Raigad.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Rajmata Jijau Contributions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajmata Jijau significantly contributed to Maratha administration, cultural revival and the upbringing of Shivaji Maharaj during a politically unstable period in the Deccan.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mentoring Shivaji Maharaj: Rajmata Jijau trained Shivaji Maharaj in warfare, governance and statecraft while promoting the idea of Hindavi Swarajya. Her teachings greatly influenced Shivaji\u2019s establishment of disciplined administration and independent Maratha rule.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Development of Pune Jagir: Jijabai administered Shahaji\u2019s Pune Jagir when Shivaji was young. Despite conflicts involving the Nizamshahi, Adilshahi and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/mughal-empire\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mughals<\/a><\/strong>, she rebuilt Pune, improved cultivation and restored public confidence through effective governance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promotion of Religion and Culture: Rajmata Jijau renovated important temples including Kevareshwar Temple, Tambadi Jogeshwari Temple and supported Kasba Ganapati Mandir. She encouraged revival of Hindu traditions, regional identity and cultural practices in Maharashtra.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Military and Administrative Skills: Jijabai was known as a skilled horse rider and swordswoman.
