{"id":104938,"date":"2026-05-25T13:37:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-25T08:07:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=104938"},"modified":"2026-05-25T13:37:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T08:07:15","slug":"rumen-fluke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/rumen-fluke\/","title":{"rendered":"Rumen Fluke"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Rumen Fluke Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 70 cattle have died in Odisha\u2019s Kendrapada district recently, with the chief district veterinary officer attributing most of the deaths to amphistomes, or rumen flukes disease, locally known as \u2018Kurmi\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Rumen Fluke<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rumen flukes are <\/span><b>parasites of ruminants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and occur worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have a <\/span><b>snail intermediate host.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>adult parasites live in the rumen (stomach), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><b>immature larval forms live<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><b>small intestine.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have been associated with<\/span><b> significant disease (paramphistomosis) in tropical and subtropical countries.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease is<\/span><b> due to intestinal damage caused by massive numbers of larvae<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the intestine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Transmission<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Through <\/span><b>ingestion of contaminated water or vegetation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> carrying larval stages.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Symptoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key signs of rumen fluke disease are <\/span><b>severe diarrhoea, rapid weight loss,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>swelling under the jaw,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> known as <\/span><b>\u201cbottle jaw\u201d.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It includes <\/span><b>reduced milk yield and curdling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and significant <\/span><b>loss in body mass<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> despite the animal\u2019s willingness to eat.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease can be<\/span><b> treated with targeted anthelmintic medicines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
