The mission primarily focused on protecting refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and civilians affected by the spillover of the <\/span><b>Darfur conflict<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Sudan into eastern <\/span><b>Chad <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the north-eastern <\/span><b>Central African Republic (CAR)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>MINURCAT Operation Background<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>MINURCAT (United Nations Mission in the Central African Republic and Chad)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was created in response to the humanitarian crisis caused by the <\/span><b>Darfur conflict<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Sudan, which began in 2003.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Violence in Darfur forced hundreds of thousands of refugees to flee into eastern Chad and the Central African Republic, creating severe regional instability.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refugee camps and local communities faced constant threats from armed rebel groups, militias, banditry, and cross-border attacks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The growing insecurity disrupted humanitarian operations and endangered aid workers providing food, shelter, and medical assistance to displaced civilians.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internal conflicts in Chad and the Central African Republic also increased the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To address the worsening security and humanitarian situation, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-the-united-nations-security-council\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>UN Security Council<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adopted <\/span><b>Resolution 1778<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 25 September 2007, authorizing the establishment of MINURCAT.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mission was launched as a multidimensional peacekeeping operation to protect civilians, support humanitarian aid, improve security, and promote regional stability in Chad and the Central African Republic.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b>MINURCAT Objectives<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MINURCAT was created to establish security and humanitarian stability in Chad and the Central African Republic. After its departure, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/the-united-nations-un\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>United Nations<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> country team and peacebuilding offices continued humanitarian and development work in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>MINURCAT Operation Significance<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"
