{"id":105740,"date":"2026-05-29T15:04:58","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T09:34:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=105740"},"modified":"2026-05-29T15:54:44","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T10:24:44","slug":"sanchi-stupa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sanchi-stupa\/","title":{"rendered":"Sanchi Stupa"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Sanchi Stupa Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, sacred relics belonging to two of Lord Buddha\u2019s most prominent disciples, Sariputra and Maudgalyayana from Sanchi Stupa are being sent to Mongolia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Sanchi Stupa<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>built by the<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/ashoka\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Mauryan emperor Ashoka<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><b>third century BC.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It enshrines religious relics or remains of the <\/span><b>Buddha and his most revered disciples.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Its construction was overseen by <\/span><b>Ashoka\u2019s wife Devi.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The development of the Sanchi complex was supported by <\/span><b>patronage from Vidisha\u2019s mercantile community.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was in abject ruins when it was \u201cdiscovered\u201d by British <\/span><b>officer Henry Taylor in 1818.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later on <\/span><b>Alexander Cunningham led<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the first formal survey and excavations at Sanchi in 1851.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Structure of Sanchi Stupa<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is enclosed by a <\/span><b>massive stone railing pierced by four gateways<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are adorned with elaborate carvings (known as Sanchi sculpture).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stupa itself consists of a <\/span><b>base bearing a hemispherical dome<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (anda), symbolizing the dome of heaven enclosing the earth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is surmounted by a <\/span><b>squared rail unit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (harmika) representing the world mountain, from which rises a mast (yashti), symbolizing the cosmic axis.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mast <\/span><b>bears umbrellas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (chatras) that represent the various heavens (devaloka).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/newsonair.gov.in\/sacred-relics-from-sanchi-stupa-to-be-sent-to-mongolia-on-pm-modis-initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">News On Air<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sanchi Stupa was built by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka in the third century BC.
