Winter pollution is dominated by finer <\/span><b>PM2.5 particles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that get trapped close to the ground due to low temperatures, low wind speeds, and the basin-like topography of cities like Delhi.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer, however, brings a different pollution chemistry \u2014 driven primarily by two pollutants \u2014 <\/span><b>PM10 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(coarser dust particles) and <\/span><b>ground-level ozone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While summer brings stronger winds and thunderstorms that help disperse some pollutants, heat and intense sunlight create their own dangerous pollution conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What is PM10 and What Causes Its Summer Spike<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PM10 refers to particulate matter smaller than 10 micrometres in diameter \u2014 coarser dust particles that can enter the respiratory tract and cause breathing problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike the finer PM2.5 of winter, PM10 is primarily driven by dust in summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two main mechanisms drive India&#8217;s summer PM10 spikes:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Natural Dust Storms \u2014 Loo and Andhi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Hot conditions over the Indian subcontinent create a low-pressure area that extends toward Iran. Its interaction with surrounding high-pressure areas produces hot, windy conditions that stir up dust storms. These include: Loo and Andhi.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><b>Loo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 Hot, dry winds that carry dust from West Asia and the Thar Desert across northern India toward the Bay of Bengal. These can elevate PM10 levels for days.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><b>Andhi <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 Shorter, localised dust storms that form when strong downward-moving air from thunderstorms hits the ground, lifts loose dust, and carries it at high speed. While loo storms are common in North India, cities like Mumbai and Hyderabad typically face dusty episodes from local thunderstorms.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Human Activities Worsening Dust<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Natural dust is compounded by human activity. Construction and demolition work \u2014 which often resumes after winter GRAP restrictions are lifted \u2014 adds significantly to PM10 without adequate dust control measures.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What is Ground-Level Ozone and Why Does It Rise in Summer<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ground-level ozone is not emitted directly from vehicles or chimneys \u2014 it is a secondary pollutant that forms through a chemical reaction.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) \u2014 largely from vehicles \u2014 and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) \u2014 from industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, paints, and other sources \u2014 react under strong sunlight, ozone is formed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hotter, sunnier summer days therefore provide ideal conditions for ozone formation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozone, along with particulate matter, causes respiratory illnesses and is particularly dangerous for children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing lung conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>The Scale of the Problem \u2014 Beyond Delhi<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer air pollution is not confined to Delhi. Between April 1 and May 31, 2026:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Delhi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 54 days with PM10 exceeding national standards (100 \u03bcg\/m\u00b3); 40 days with hourly ozone breaches.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Mumbai<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 High PM10 and ozone levels driven by construction activity, dust, and traffic.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Chennai<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 Occasional PM10 breaches; high vehicular density and hot weather make it an <\/span><b>ozone hotspot<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 Also recorded PM10 and ozone spikes driven by local sources.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What Can Cities Do \u2014 Solutions and Way Forward<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Forecasting and Early Warning Systems<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural dust cannot be controlled \u2014 but it can be predicted. Delhi&#8217;s Air Quality Early Warning System (AQEWS) \u2014 created after the severe 2018 dust storms \u2014 now runs year-round and has been extended to Jaipur and Mumbai.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It provides three-day Air Quality Index (AQI) forecasts for 140 Indian cities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IMD also publishes national weather forecast bulletins multiple times daily.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Authorities must use these systems to issue timely local alerts on dust storms, ozone, and poor air quality so citizens can reduce exposure.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Construction Dust Control<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Construction sites need active dust management year-round \u2014 not just during winter GRAP periods.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A CEEW study found that simply reducing heavy vehicle movement at construction sites can lower local PM levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reducing Ozone \u2014 Cutting NOx and VOC Emissions<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tackling ozone requires cleaner transport, better industrial compliance, and attention to solvents, paints, and fuel combustion.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even simple behavioural campaigns like Delhi&#8217;s &#8216;Red Light On, Gaadi Off&#8217;
