{"id":107091,"date":"2026-06-07T10:18:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-07T04:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=107091"},"modified":"2026-06-07T12:26:50","modified_gmt":"2026-06-07T06:56:50","slug":"project-glasswing-explained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/project-glasswing-explained\/","title":{"rendered":"Project Glasswing: India&#8217;s Cybersecurity Agencies to Get Access to Anthropic&#8217;s Powerful AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Project Glasswing Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US AI company Anthropic is extending access to its restricted cybersecurity programme, Project Glasswing, to select organisations in India \u2014 including key government agencies responsible for protecting the country&#8217;s critical infrastructure.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This follows Anthropic&#8217;s announcement that it would expand the programme from its initial US and UK participants to over 15 countries, with India being a significant addition.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What Is Project Glasswing and What Is Mythos<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Anthropic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the world&#8217;s leading AI companies, known for its AI model Claude.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it has also developed a far more powerful and restricted model called <\/span><b>Claude Mythos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 described as a <\/span><b>frontier AI model<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> capable of identifying critical software vulnerabilities at a level that could &#8220;fundamentally alter the balance between cyber attackers and defenders.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a significant claim. Most cybersecurity today depends on human experts finding software weaknesses before attackers do.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A model that can do this at scale and speed could be a game-changer \u2014 but in the wrong hands, it could also be catastrophically dangerous. That is why Anthropic has kept Mythos strictly restricted and not publicly released.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Project Glasswing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the controlled programme through which Anthropic shares access to <\/span><b>Mythos Preview<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the testing version) with a carefully vetted set of trusted organisations.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each organisation must meet Anthropic&#8217;s security requirements before gaining access.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Which Indian Agencies Are Getting Access<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following Indian government bodies are understood to have received \u2014 or are in line to receive \u2014 access to Mythos:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>I4C<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>CERT-In<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (the nodal agency for cybersecurity incidents in India)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>NCIIPC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (falls under the National Security Advisor in the Prime Minister&#8217;s Office)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>DIP<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 Department of Telecommunications&#8217; Digital Intelligence Platform<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, some cybersecurity-focused research institutions have received access, and discussions are underway to extend it to cybersecurity and AI teams within India&#8217;s largest IT services companies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The purpose is specific: NCIIPC and CERT-In requested access to use Mythos to identify vulnerabilities within India&#8217;s banking and power infrastructure \u2014 before attackers can find and exploit them.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Why India Is Particularly Concerned<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India&#8217;s concern about Mythos is two-sided \u2014 both as an opportunity and as a threat.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>The Defensive Opportunity<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India&#8217;s critical infrastructure \u2014 banking systems, power grids, telecom networks \u2014 is a high-value target for cyberattacks.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A tool that can proactively find and fix software vulnerabilities in these systems before adversaries exploit them would be enormously valuable.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>The Offensive Threat<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, India&#8217;s government was also worried about what Mythos could do to India&#8217;s systems in the wrong hands.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in April 2026, held a high-level meeting with IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to assess risks posed by Mythos to India&#8217;s banking sector.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meeting resulted in concrete directions: the Indian Banks&#8217; Association (IBA) was asked to develop a coordinated institutional response mechanism, and banks were directed to engage top cybersecurity professionals to continuously strengthen their defensive and monitoring capabilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>The Geopolitical Dimension: Anthropic vs. the US Pentagon<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per various reports, Anthropic is helping the <\/span><b>US National Security Agency (NSA)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> deploy Mythos for <\/span><b>offensive cyber operations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 specifically to infiltrate networks of countries like China and Iran.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This creates an awkward contradiction. Anthropic is simultaneously:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providing Mythos to trusted allies (including India) for defensive cybersecurity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reportedly assisting the NSA with offensive cyber operations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fighting a legal battle with the US Department of Defense (which includes the NSA) over the boundaries of AI use.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The legal dispute arose because Anthropic drew a firm line \u2014 it refused to allow its Claude AI models to be used for mass surveillance of US citizens or lethal autonomous drones.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pentagon responded by labelling Anthropic a &#8220;supply-chain risk&#8221; \u2014 an unprecedented designation for a US company.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthropic has sued over this label.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI is becoming a national security asset.
