text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>road construction executive force<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in India that provides s<\/span><b>upport to the Indian Armed Forces.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BRO was entirely brought under the <\/span><b>Ministry of Defence <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2015.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Establishment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It was formed on 7 May <\/span><b>1960 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to secure India\u2019s borders and develop <\/span><b>infrastructure in remote areas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the north and northeastern states of the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>develops and maintains road networks in India\u2019s border areas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>friendly neighboring countries.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This includes infrastructure operations in 1<\/span><b>9 states and three union territories <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(including Andaman and Nicobar Islands) and <\/span><b>neighboring countries such as Afghanistan, Bhutan, Myanmar, Tajikistan, and Sri Lanka.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BRO specialises in <\/span><b>constructing and maintaining Roads, Bridges, Tunnels, Airfields<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Marine Works across some of the world\u2019s most challenging terrains.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BRO also has an <\/span><b>operational role during national emergencies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the<\/span><b> outbreak of hostilities, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when it provides <\/span><b>direct support to the Army in the maintenance of roads<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the forward zones and executes <\/span><b>other functions specified by the government.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also provides the <\/span><b>workforce for the rehabilitation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of certain<\/span><b> forward airfields of <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>Indian Air Force <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during operations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BRO is also <\/span><b>included in the Order of Battle of the Armed Forces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ensuring their support at any time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order<\/span><b> to ensure coordination<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and expeditious execution of projects, the <\/span><b>Government of India set up the Border Roads Development Board (BRDB)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the <\/span><b>Prime Minister<\/b> <b>as Chairman <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the Board and the <\/span><b>Defence Minister as Deputy Chairman.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>executive head of the BRO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the <\/span><b>Director General of Border Roads (DGBR), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who holds the<\/span><b> rank of Lieutenant General.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Officers and personnel from the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> form the <\/span><b>parent cadre of the BRO.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also staffed by <\/span><b>officers and troops drawn from the Indian Army\u2019s Corps of Engineers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on extra-regimental employment (on deputation).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BRO <\/span><b>also employs more than two lakh (200,000) local workers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the task of ensuring employment in far-flung areas. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
