style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The origins of the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory can be traced to the devastating <\/span><b>Great Drought of 1875-1878, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the worst climatic disasters of the nineteenth century.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this period, repeated monsoon failures caused widespread famine in India and contributed to a global famine that claimed nearly 50 million lives.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span
