{"id":107366,"date":"2026-06-09T13:30:05","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T08:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=107366"},"modified":"2026-06-09T13:30:33","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T08:00:33","slug":"wangchhu-hydroelectric-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wangchhu-hydroelectric-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) recently secured a contract worth Rs 127 crore from Wangchhu Hydroelectric Power (WHPL), Bhutan, for construction works related to the Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>570 MW run-of-river<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hydropower project being built on the <\/span><b>Wangchu River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/basin in Chukha District, <\/span><b>Bhutan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wangchu River (also called <\/span><b>Raid\u0101k River in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is a significan<\/span><b>t tributary of the Brahmaputra <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">River.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is being <\/span><b>developed by Wangchhu Hydroelectric Power Limited (WHPL),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span><b>joint venture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> company formed by I<\/span><b>ndia\u2019s Adani Power Limited (APL)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Bhutan\u2019s state-owned Druk Green Power Corporation Ltd (DGPC).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>DGPC <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">holds a controlling<\/span><b> 51% stake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the venture, with Adani Power owning the remaining 49%.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project, valued at Rs 6,000 crore, will follow a <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bot\/\" target=\"_blank\">Build, Own, Operate, Transfer (BOOT) model<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the BOOT framework, <\/span><b>Adani Power will construct, operate, and manage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the project for a<\/span><b> fixed period before transferring ownership to the Bhutanese government.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the first initiative under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in May 2025 between Adani Power and DGPC to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The facility will function as a peaking run-of-river plant, helping Bhutan manage seasonal fluctuations in hydropower generation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The facility will feature four turbines, each rated at 142.5 MW, producing roughly 2,478.93 GWh annually.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is designed to <\/span><b>meet Bhutan\u2019s peak winter electricity demand <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while <\/span><b>exporting surplus power to India during the summer months. <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source<\/b><strong>:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/markets\/capital-market-news\/hindustan-construction-secures-rs-127-cr-wangchhu-hydroelectric-project-126060500174_1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>BS<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project is a 570 MW run-of-river hydropower project being built on the Wangchu River\/basin in Chukha District, Bhutan.
