{"id":10737,"date":"2023-05-10T02:06:52","date_gmt":"2023-05-09T20:36:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=10737"},"modified":"2025-03-29T22:22:09","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T16:52:09","slug":"what-is-bovine-viral-diarrhoea-bvd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-bovine-viral-diarrhoea-bvd\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>BVD is an <strong>infectious disease<\/strong>, globally distributed <strong>endemic to cattle and other ruminant populations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is caused by the <strong>Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Effects<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It can cause of <strong>respiratory and reproductive issues<\/strong> in the herd.<\/li>\n<li>It leads to <strong>immunosuppression<\/strong> and can <strong>cause signs in multiple body systems<\/strong> in addition to the <strong>digestive tract<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transmission<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Most animals become <strong>exposed through contact with other recently infected<\/strong> or persistently infected (carrier) animals that are shedding the virus.<\/li>\n<li>It is also possible for cattle to become infected <strong>via contact with contaminated fomites, such as water buckets<\/strong>, calf feeders, feed bunks, IV equipment etc.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>can be transmitted through a congenital infection of the fetus or after birth<\/strong>. The BVD infection in these calves will <strong>persist during the entire life of the calf<\/strong>, and they will <strong>shed BVDV continuously in the farm environment.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>While this <strong>virus has no cure<\/strong>, practising <strong>supportive therapies<\/strong> will temporarily help to improve the well-being of the cattle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Infected calves should be culled<\/strong> to prevent the spread of BVD.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is immunosuppression?<\/h3>\n<p>The suppression of the body\u2019s innate ability to ward off disease and infection is known as immunosuppression.
