{"id":10765,"date":"2025-11-11T10:42:45","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T05:12:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=10765"},"modified":"2025-11-11T16:39:02","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T11:09:02","slug":"what-is-an-improvised-explosive-device-ied","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-an-improvised-explosive-device-ied\/","title":{"rendered":"Improvised Explosive Device (IED)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Improvised Explosive Device Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J&amp;K Police recently arrested seven locals linked to a terror module, seizing 2900 kg of IED-making materials and arms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Improvised Explosive Device<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An IED is a type of <\/span><b>unconventional explosive weapon <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that can <\/span><b>take any form<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and be <\/span><b>activated in a variety of ways.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IEDs are<\/span><b> used by criminals, vandals, terrorists, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suicide bombers, and insurgents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because they are improvised, IEDs can<\/span><b> come in many forms,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ranging from a small pipe bomb to a sophisticated device<\/span><b> capable of causing massive damage and loss of life<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> extent of damage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caused by an IED <\/span><b>depends on its size, construction,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>placement <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>whether it incorporates a high explosive or propellant.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0IEDs can be carried or <\/span><b>delivered in a vehicle; carried, placed, or thrown by a person; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">delivered in a package; or <\/span><b>concealed on the roadside.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>term IED came into common usage during the Iraq War<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that began in <\/span><b>2003<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IEDs are <\/span><b>inexpensive <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and can be <\/span><b>easily manufactured<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, concealed and detonated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, IEDs can be <\/span><b>manufactured by using commonly available material or chemicals.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Elements of an IED:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It consists of a variety of components that include an <\/span><b>initiator<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>switch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>main charge, power source, and container.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IEDs may be surrounded by or <\/span><b>packed with additional materials <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><b>\u201cenhancements\u201d such as nails, glass, or metal fragments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> designed to increase the amount of shrapnel propelled by the explosion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An IED can be initiated by a variety of methods depending on the intended target.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Materials Used as Explosives in IEDs:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many commonly available materials, such as <\/span><b>fertilizer, gunpowder, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>hydrogen peroxide,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are <\/span><b>used as explosive<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> materials in IEDs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explosives must <\/span><b>contain a fuel and an oxidizer, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which provides the oxygen needed to sustain the reaction.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>common example is ANFO, a mixture of ammonium nitrate,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which <\/span><b>acts as the oxidizer, and fuel oil (the fuel source). <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/jammu-and-kashmir\/jk-locals-held-for-running-inter-state-terror-module-ied-making-material-seized-says-police\/article70262318.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Improvised Explosive Device is a type of unconventional explosive weapon that can take any form and be activated in a variety of ways.
