Assembly<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> officially declared <\/span><b>13 June<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as <\/span><b>International Albinism Awareness Day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, marking an important step toward global recognition of the issue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This decision helped bring <\/span><b>worldwide attention<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the challenges faced by people with albinism and strengthened efforts to promote their <\/span><b>rights, aria-level=\"1\"><b>Albinism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a <\/span><b>rare, genetic condition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that a person is born with. It is <\/span><b>not contagious<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means it cannot spread from one person to another.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It usually occurs when <\/span><b>both parents carry the gene<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even if they do not have albinism themselves.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This condition can affect <\/span><b>anyone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, regardless of <\/span><b>gender, ethnicity, or country<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and is found all around the world.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with albinism have very little or no <\/span><b>melanin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the natural pigment that gives colour to the <\/span><b>skin, hair, and eyes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of this lack of pigment, they are more <\/span><b>sensitive to sunlight and bright light<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can make daily life challenging.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people with albinism also have some level of <\/span><b>visual impairment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning their eyesight is weaker or affected in different ways.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are also at a higher risk of developing <\/span><b>skin cancer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially without proper sun protection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is currently <\/span><b>no cure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for albinism, as the absence of melanin is a natural genetic condition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of people with albinism varies across regions. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/north-america\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>North America<\/b><\/a><b> and <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/european-countries\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Europe<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about <\/span><b>1 in 17,000 to 20,000 people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are affected.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The condition is more common in parts of <\/span><b>sub-Saharan Africa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For example, in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/tanzania\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Tanzania<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about <\/span><b>1 in 1,400 people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have albinism.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some communities in <\/span><b>Zimbabwe and Southern Africa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the number can be as high as <\/span><b>1 in 1,000 people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, showing a higher prevalence in certain populations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also Read: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/important-days-in-june-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\">Important Days in June 2026<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><b>Health Challenges and Social Barriers Faced by People with Albinism<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People living with <\/span><b>albinism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> face serious <\/span><b>health challenges<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, mainly because their bodies lack <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/melanin\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>melanin<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which normally protects the skin from the sun.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to this, they are at a <\/span><b>high risk of developing skin cancer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially in areas with strong sunlight. In some countries, many people with albinism sadly <\/span><b>do not live beyond 30-40 years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of untreated skin cancer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <\/span><b>skin cancer is largely preventable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if proper care and protection are available.
