Assam, in particular, is one of India&#8217;s major oil and gas producing states.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a stretch of land along the Assam-Nagaland border \u2014 known as the Disputed Area Belt (DAB) \u2014 has remained a no-go zone for oil and gas exploration for three decades due to boundary disputes and law and order problems between the two states.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This area is believed to hold promising hydrocarbon reserves, but they have remained untapped simply because the two states could not agree on resolving the border dispute first.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>About the New MoU<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The MoU does not resolve the border dispute itself. Instead, it creates a <\/span><b>practical working arrangement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so that oil and gas exploration can begin despite the unresolved boundary issue.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key features include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" 400;\">Importantly, both states have agreed not to let the border dispute become an obstacle to oil exploration \u2014 treating these resources as national wealth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond the six already-identified oil and gas fields, Nagaland has agreed to allow oil exploration across the entire state.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Significance of The New MoU: The Energy Security Angle<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India currently depends on imports for over <\/span><b>88% of its crude oil<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> needs and about <\/span><b>half of its natural reserves.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nagaland has major <\/span><b>untapped hydrocarbon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> potential in a geological formation called the <\/span><b>Naga-Schuppen Belt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, part of the larger <\/span><b>Assam-Arakan Basin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home Minister Amit Shah noted that current oil production from the Northeast stands at just 1,000-1,500 barrels per day, but this agreement could help increase production by more than tenfold over time.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"
