


{"id":108166,"date":"2026-06-14T11:56:31","date_gmt":"2026-06-14T06:26:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=108166"},"modified":"2026-06-14T16:13:27","modified_gmt":"2026-06-14T10:43:27","slug":"naval-anti-ship-missile-medium-range-nasm-mr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/naval-anti-ship-missile-medium-range-nasm-mr\/","title":{"rendered":"Naval Anti-Ship Missile\u2013Medium Range (NASM\u2013MR)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Naval Anti-Ship Missile\u2013Medium Range (NASM\u2013MR) Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India recently concluded successful trials of a multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system and the maiden flight-test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range (NASM-MR).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Naval Anti-Ship Missile\u2013Medium Range (NASM\u2013MR)<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a<\/span><b> subsonic, sea-skimming anti-ship missile.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is being developed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/defence-research-and-development-organisation-drdo\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Defence Research and Development Organisation<\/strong><\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/defence-research-and-development-organisation-drdo\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong> (DRDO)<\/strong><\/a><b> for the Indian Navy for use against small- to medium-sized targets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as frigates, corvettes, and destroyers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will have <\/span><b>different versions,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including <\/span><b>ship-launched, air-launched,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>submarine-launched<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> variants.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The missile <\/span><b>complements the existing Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Short Range (NASM-SR), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which was successfully tested earlier from a helicopter platform.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Together, these systems <\/span><b>provide layered strike options for the Navy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, enabling both close-range and medium-range engagements against hostile warships.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Features<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is powered by a <\/span><b>Small Gas Turbine Jet Engine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SGTJE).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This all-weather missile has a <\/span><b>strike range of up to 350 km.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a warhead weighing more than 200 kilograms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has an <\/span><b>advanced guidance system, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which reportedly combines an <\/span><b>active radar seeker with an imaging infrared (IR) seeker.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Successful Trials of Multi-Layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>latest tests <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">involved<\/span><b> advanced interceptor systems <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developed <\/span><b>under Phase II of the BMD programme<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including the <\/span><b>AD-series interceptors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These systems have been designed to <\/span><b>engage and neutralise advanced, high-speed threats <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as <\/span><b>intermediate-range <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ballistic-missiles\/\" target=\"_blank\">ballistic missiles<\/a> (IRBMs) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>ICBMs capable of travelling up to the 5,000-km class.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> AD-1 endo-atmospheric interceptor <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been designed to <\/span><b>intercept targets within the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere during the terminal phase of their flight.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Propelled by a <\/span><b>two-stage solid motor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it utilises <\/span><b>advanced navigatio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n and <\/span><b>guidance algorithms to track and destro<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y fast-moving missiles as well as slower-moving aircraft.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, the <\/span><b>AD-2 intercepto<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r has been designed to <\/span><b>intercept <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incoming missiles at <\/span><b>much higher altitudes,<\/b> <b>beyond the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere during their mid-course<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> flight phase.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This allows <\/span><b>early interception in space,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> destroying threats before they can re-enter and target specific regions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Both missiles <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are <\/span><b>highly manoeuvrable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>capable of hypersonic speed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s ranging from Mach 6 to Mach 7, enabling them to intercept fast-moving ballistic targets.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
