


{"id":10821,"date":"2023-05-11T07:33:45","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T02:03:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=10821"},"modified":"2025-03-29T22:52:59","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T17:22:59","slug":"what-is-the-coal-mines-nationalisation-act-1973","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-the-coal-mines-nationalisation-act-1973\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Coal Mines (Nationalisation) Act, 1973?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Coal Mines (Nationalisation) Act, 1973:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It was enacted by the Indian Parliament, p<strong>roviding for the acquisition and transfer of the right<\/strong>, title and interest <strong>of the owners in respect of coal mines<\/strong> specified in the Schedule.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Schedule<\/strong> to the Act <strong>contained a list of about 711 coal mines<\/strong> located in different parts of the country.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objective<\/strong>: To ensure the <strong>rational, coordinated and scientific development<\/strong> and <strong>utilisation of coal resources<\/strong> consistent with the growing requirements of the country.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Under the Act, coal mining is exclusively reserved for the public sector<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>By an amendment to the Act in 1976, two exceptions<\/strong> to this policy were introduced, viz.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>captive mining by private companies engaged in the production of iron and steel<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>sub-lease for coal mining to private parties in isolated small pockets<\/strong> not amenable to economic development and not requiring rail transport;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>It was amended <\/strong>e.f. 9.6.1993<strong> to allow private sector participation in captive coal mining for generation of power<\/strong>, <strong>for washing of coal<\/strong> obtained from a mine or for other end uses to be notified by Government from time to time in addition to the existing provision for the production of iron and steel.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Under the Act, the <strong>allotment of coal mines for captive use<\/strong> was <strong>based on the recommendation<\/strong> of a high-powered <strong>committee chaired by the Secretary, <\/strong>Ministry of Coal.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mining of Coal for captive use for the production of cement has also been permitted<\/strong> by the Government notification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What are Captive Mines?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Captive mines are the <strong>mines that are owned by companies<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The coal or <strong>mineral produced from these mines is for the exclusive use<\/strong> of the owner company of the mines.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>company cannot sell coal or mineral outside.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is the Competition Commission of India (CCI)?<\/h3>\n<p>CCI is a statutory body established under the Competition Act, 2002, tasked with ensuring a fair and healthy competition in economic activities of the country.
