


{"id":108258,"date":"2026-06-15T13:47:03","date_gmt":"2026-06-15T08:17:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=108258"},"modified":"2026-06-15T13:47:03","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T08:17:03","slug":"arbuscular-mycorrhizal-fungi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/arbuscular-mycorrhizal-fungi\/","title":{"rendered":"Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new study published in Science has reported the first global map of the earth\u2019s vast underground network of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are <\/span><b>groups of root obligate biotrophs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> belonging to the phylum Glomeromycota.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are <\/span><b>soil-borne microorganisms that form<\/b> <b>symbiotic associations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with approximately 80% of terrestrial vascular plants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AMF are <\/span><b>primary biotic soil components<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which, when missing or impoverished, can lead to a less efficient ecosystem functioning.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Structure:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These are made up of <\/span><b>tiny branching threads called hyphae<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These hyphal networks form two-way pipes to channel nutrients and carbon to and from plants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grassland ecosystems like those in <\/span><b>South Sudan, the Tibetan plateau, and India\u2019s Banni grasslands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> house <\/span><b>40% of the world\u2019s AM fungal networks.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its networks also weigh around 300 million tonnes of carbon, which is four- to six-times the weight of the entire human population.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ecological Role<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are <\/span><b>considered natural biofertilizers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which provide the host with water, nutrients, and pathogen protection, in exchange for photosynthetic products.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They <\/span><b>provide nutrients<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and water in exchange for the carbon produced by the plants, and help to regulate the climate by drawing carbon into soils.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It formed symbiotic relationships with <\/span><b>70% of plant species,<\/b> <b>trading nutrients for carbon and<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sequesters an <\/span><b>estimated 4 billion tonnes of CO2-equivalent a year.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/energy-and-environment\/the-giant-world-of-fungi\/article71100234.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi are groups of root obligate biotrophs belonging to the phylum Glomeromycota.
