in <\/span><b>honour of noted bryologist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and specialist in the study of non-flowering plants, <\/span><b>Dr. Devendra Kumar Singh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the <\/span><b>Botanical Survey of India (BSI).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>unique feature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the newly identified plant is that it <\/span><b>grows on the mushroom Phellinus fastuosus, which develops on tree trunks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indocolea is an <\/span><b>entirely new genus discovered in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>belongs to liverworts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><b>group within the bryophytes.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first such genus, Aitchisoniella, was discovered in the Western Himalayas in 1914 by renowned botanist Professor Shiv Ram Kashyap.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was followed by Sewardiella in 1915.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly a century later, Indopottia was discovered from Silent Valley in Kerala in 2013, while Udaria was reported from Himachal Pradesh in 2018 and later revised as Ramudaria in 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What is a Liverwort?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is any of more than 9,000 species of <\/span><b>small nonvascular<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (lacking xylem and phloem) <\/span><b>spore-producing plants.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are closely <\/span><b>related to mosses and hornworts.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Unlike flowering plants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, liverworts <\/span><b>lack true roots, stems, and leaves.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than having distinct stems and leaves, liverworts have a <\/span><b>combined structure called a \u2018\u2019thallus\u2019\u2019 that branches, creating flattened lobes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They <\/span><b>absorb water and nutrients directly through their surface.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liverworts are <\/span><b>distributed worldwide, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">though most <\/span><b>commonly in the tropics.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plants are <\/span><b>not economically important<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to humans but do <\/span><b>provide food for animals, facilitate the decay of logs,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><b> aid in the disintegration of rocks <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by their ability to retain moisture.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liverworts are among the <\/span><b>oldest terrestrial plants on Earth,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with fossil records dating back over 470 million years.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News<\/b><strong>:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etvbharat.com\/amp\/en\/state\/kerala-researchers-identify-rare-new-plant-genus-only-the-fifth-such-discovery-in-india-enn26061504887\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>ETVB<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Indocolea devendrae is a new species of bryophyte plant discovered in the  forests of northern Kerala.
