


{"id":10850,"date":"2023-05-14T02:30:03","date_gmt":"2023-05-13T21:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=10850"},"modified":"2025-03-29T23:03:20","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T17:33:20","slug":"what-is-mitochondrial-replacement-therapy-mrt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-mitochondrial-replacement-therapy-mrt\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Mitochondrial Replacement Therapy (MRT)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Why in News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2015, the United Kingdom became the first country to regulate mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>About Mitochondrial Replacement Therapy (MRT):<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What is it?<\/strong> It is a new form of <strong>reproductive in-vitro fertilization (IVF)<\/strong> which works on the principle of <strong>replacing a women&#8217;s abnormal mitochondrial DNA (mt-DNA) with the donor&#8217;s healthy one.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Why is MRT done?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>People have two types of DNA<\/strong> in their cells, <strong>nuclear DNA<\/strong>, which is <strong>inherited from both <\/strong>parents and <strong>mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA<\/strong>), which is <strong>inherited only from the mother.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>MRT is designed <strong>to prevent women who are carriers of mitochondrial diseases from passing on these heritable genetic diseases to their children<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>How is MRT carried out?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>MRT involves <strong>using an egg<\/strong> from an egg donor who <strong>doesn\u2019t have mutations<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>nucleus of the egg is removed<\/strong> and <strong>replaced with the nuclear DNA from the woman who has mitochondrial DNA mutations.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>egg is then fertilized<\/strong> with the father\u2019s sperm in the embryology lab.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If it grows into an embryo<\/strong> for transfer during IVF treatment, the embryo<strong> would be free of mitochondrial disease.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is in-vitro fertilization (IVF)?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a type of <strong>assisted reproductive technology (ART<\/strong>) where <strong>sperm and an egg are fertilized outside of the human body.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>IVF is a complex process that <strong>involves retrieving eggs from ovaries<\/strong> and manually <strong>combining them with sperm in a lab for fertilization<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Several days after fertilization, the <strong>fertilized egg (now called an embryo) is placed inside a uterus. <\/strong>Pregnancy occurs when this embryo implants itself into the uterine wall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is Mitochondria?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Mitochondria are <strong>membrane-bound cell organelles<\/strong> that <strong>generate most of the chemical energy<\/strong> needed to power the cell&#8217;s biochemical reactions.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Mitochondria are often <strong>referred to as the powerhouses of the cell<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Chemical <strong>energy produced<\/strong> by the mitochondria<strong> is stored in a small molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP).\u00a0<\/strong> <strong>ATP is the chemical energy &#8220;currency<\/strong>&#8221; of the cell that powers the cell&#8217;s metabolic activities.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Generally, mitochondria, and therefore mitochondrial DNA, are <strong>inherited only from the mother.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is mitochondrial DNA (mt-DNA)?\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>Mitochondrial DNA is the circular chromosome found inside the cellular organelles called mitochondria. Located in the cytoplasm, mitochondria are the site of the cell\u2019s energy production and other metabolic functions.
