


{"id":10858,"date":"2023-05-14T03:42:10","date_gmt":"2023-05-13T22:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=10858"},"modified":"2025-03-29T23:06:24","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T17:36:24","slug":"what-is-kohinoor-diamond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-kohinoor-diamond\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Kohinoor Diamond?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Kohinoor Diamond:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Kohinoor\/<\/strong>Koh-i-Noor diamond (also Koh-i-Nur or K\u016bh-e N\u016br) is <strong>one of the largest and most famous cut diamonds<\/strong> in the world.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The name<\/strong> of the stone <strong>is Persian, meaning \u2018Mountain of Light\u2019<\/strong> and refers to its <strong>astounding size.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The diamond <strong>originally weighed 191 carats<\/strong>, but it was <strong>recut to 105.6 carats<\/strong> to enhance its fire and brilliance <strong>in 1852 by Garrard of London, the royal jeweller<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>History<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It is believed that the diamond was <strong>first mentioned more than 5000 years ago<\/strong> in a <strong>Sanskrit script<\/strong>, where <strong>it was called the Syamantaka<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>After this first written mention, <strong>for over 4,000 years, the diamond is not mentioned.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Up until 1304<\/strong>, <strong>the diamond<\/strong> was in the <strong>possession of the Rajas of Malwa<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In 1304<\/strong>, <strong>it belonged<\/strong> to the Emperor of Delhi, <strong>Allaudin Khilji<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In 1339<\/strong>, the diamond was <strong>taken back to the city of Samarkand<\/strong>, where it <strong>stayed<\/strong> <strong>for almost 300 years.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>In 1526<\/strong> the Mogul ruler <strong>Babur mentioned the diamond in his writings<\/strong>, <strong>Baburmama<\/strong>. The diamond was <strong>gifted to him by Sultan Ibrahim<\/strong> Lodi.<\/li>\n<li><strong>From Babur, the diamond passed to Shah Jahan<\/strong> <strong>and Aurangzeb<\/strong> before coming into the <strong>possession of his grandson, Sultan Mahamad<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In 1739<\/strong>, the Persian general <strong>Nadir Shah defeated Sultan Mahamad<\/strong> <strong>to conquer<\/strong> Delhi \u2013 and <strong>the diamond<\/strong>. It was <strong>Nadir Shah that gave the diamond its current name.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>In 1747, Nadir Shah was assassinated,<\/strong> and the <strong>diamond got to<\/strong> one of <strong>his generals, Ahmad Shah Durrani.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>A descendant of Ahmad Shah, <strong>Shah Shuja Durrani brought the Koh-i-noor back to India in 1813 and gave it to Ranjit Singh<\/strong> (the founder of the Sikh Empire). In exchange, Ranjit Singh helped Shah Shuja get back the throne of Afghanistan.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In 1849, after the conquest of the Punjab by the British forces, the properties of the Sikh Empire were confiscated.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Koh-i-Noor was<strong> transferred to the treasury of the British East India Company<\/strong> in Lahore.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Since 1849, the Koh-i-Noor has been part of the British crown jewels.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is a Diamond Cut?<\/h3>\n<p>Cut refers not to a diamond&#8217;s shape (e.g. round, oval, pear, etc.) but to a diamond&#8217;s proportions, symmetry and polish.
