{"id":108658,"date":"2026-06-18T12:19:52","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T06:49:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=108658"},"modified":"2026-06-18T13:27:37","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T07:57:37","slug":"mombasa-declaration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mombasa-declaration\/","title":{"rendered":"Mombasa Declaration"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Mombasa Declaration Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 Fifteen countries from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, and the Pacific recently adopted the Mombasa Declaration to step up efforts to combat illegal fishing.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Mombasa Declaration<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>adopted by 15 countries from Africa, Asia, Europe, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/caribbean-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Caribbean<\/a>, and the Pacific<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to step up efforts to <\/span><b>combat illegal fishing.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It calls on governments to <\/span><b>improve access to information on fishing vessels, ownership, and licensing, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and to <\/span><b>strengthen data sharing to better track fishing activities <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>enforce regulations.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is named after the<\/span><b> Kenyan city hosting the 11th Our Ocean Conference (OOC).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of the <\/span><b>more than 30 countries represented in the summit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Belgium, Cameroon, Chile, the Dominican Republic, France, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Republic of the Congo, Somalia, and South Korea signed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the agreement.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is intended to <\/span><b>curb illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, also known as IUU fishing, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which threatens marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on fisheries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The declaration <\/span><b>builds support for the Global Charter for Fisheries Transparency, a set of 10 policy principles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aimed at improving governance through low-cost reforms, including modernizing vessel registries and publishing fishing authorizations.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Key Facts about Our Ocean Conference (OOC)<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Launched in 2014 by the U.S. Department of State and former Secretary of State John Kerry,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the OOC is a major international platform that <\/span><b>unites governments, businesses, NGOs, and academic institutions <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to drive<\/span><b> ocean-related action and ambition. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conference focuses on <\/span><b>six critical areas:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Marine protected areas.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Sustainable blue economy<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Climate change<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Maritime security<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Sustainable fisheries<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Marine pollution.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since its inception, it has generated over 2,600 commitments valued at more than $160 billion, making it one of the most impactful global gatherings for ocean sustainability.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>2026 OCC: Mombasa (Kenya)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211;
