Tracking electrification levels has become an important indicator of progress toward climate goals and energy transition.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Current Status of Global Electrification<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the widespread presence of electricity in modern life, its contribution to overall energy consumption remains relatively limited.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the International Energy Agency (IEA):<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electricity accounted for only <\/span><b>21% of global Total Final Energy Consumption (TFEC) in 2025<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The corresponding figure for <\/span><b>India was about 23%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TFEC measures the energy ultimately consumed by end users and excludes energy used during extraction, conversion, transportation, and distribution processes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although global electricity generation increased from around <\/span><b>24 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2015 to over 32 TWh in 2025<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the share of electricity in final energy consumption increased only modestly, from <\/span><b>17.7% to 21%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the same period.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Challenges to Rapid Electrification<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several sectors remain difficult to electrify because of technological and operational constraints. These include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aviation and shipping<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy-duty and long-haul transport<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iron and steel manufacturing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cement production<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glass and ceramics industries<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain residential heating applications<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of these sectors require high-temperature processes or energy-dense fuels that currently lack commercially viable electric alternatives.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, significant portions of global energy demand continue to rely on fossil fuels.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The Clean Electricity Challenge<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electrification alone is not sufficient to achieve climate goals. The source of electricity also matters. According to IEA data:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only about 42% of global electricity generation in 2025 came from non-fossil fuel sources such as renewables, hydropower, and nuclear energy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This creates a major challenge:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only 21% of final energy consumption is electrified<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only 42% of that electricity is generated from clean sources<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, just over 8% of the world&#8217;s total energy consumption currently comes from clean electricity, while more than 90% of global energy use still depends on fossil fuels.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These figures underline the scale of the transition required to achieve international climate targets.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Turkey&#8217;s Proposed Electrification Target<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the Bonn climate talks, Turkey proposed that countries collectively aim to meet at least 35% of global energy demand through electricity by 2035. Currently, global electrification levels are around 20-23%.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposal is based on a roadmap prepared by the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/international-renewable-energy-agency\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Renewable Energy Agency<\/a> (IRENA)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to IRENA:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>35% electrification rate by 2035<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> represents the minimum level required to keep the world on the <\/span><b>1.5\u00b0C pathway<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/paris-agreement\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Paris Agreement<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposal is expected to be discussed at <\/span><b>COP31<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which Turkey and Australia will jointly host in Antalya later this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Requirements for Achieving the Target<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achieving the proposed electrification target will require substantial investments and infrastructure expansion. Key requirements include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annual investments of approximately <\/span><b>$1.2 trillion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in electricity systems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid expansion of renewable energy capacity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Large-scale deployment of battery storage systems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modernisation of transmission and distribution networks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electrification of transport and industrial sectors<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The challenge is further complicated by geopolitical conflicts, supply chain disruptions, and economic uncertainties that may affect investment flows and energy security priorities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Implications for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing renewable energy markets and already derives approximately 23% of its final energy consumption through electricity.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For India, accelerated electrification can contribute to:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduced dependence on imported fossil fuels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improved energy security<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower greenhouse gas emissions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expansion of electric mobility<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progress toward its net-zero target of 2070<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
