The report shows that almost every child in India is exposed to at least one climate hazard, while the vast majority face multiple overlapping risks at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report is based on global child hazard data and maps how children are exposed to climate-related risks such as droughts, floods, heatwaves, storms and extreme weather events.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Key Findings of the Children\u2019s Climate Risk Report 2026\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report finds that <\/span><b>97% of children in India are exposed to at least two overlapping climate or disaster-related hazards<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It estimates that <\/span><b>411.62 million children in India are exposed to at least two climate-related hazards<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including drought, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/floods\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>floods<\/strong><\/a>, tropical storms, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/heat-waves\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>heatwaves<\/strong><\/a>, wildfires and sandstorms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Major Climate Hazards Affecting Children<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>More than 234 million children, nearly 55% of India\u2019s child population, face at least three climate hazards<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common combination is <\/span><b>drought<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>extreme heat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>affecting more than 158.8 million children,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> followed by combinations such as <\/span><b>tropical storms with drought and hea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>t<\/strong>, and <\/span><b>riverine floods with drought and heat.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report identifies <\/span><b>drought as the most widespread hazard<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, affecting more than 96% of children (about 410.2 million) and posing a serious threat to food security and livelihoods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Around 155.7 million children are exposed to tropical storms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which damage homes, schools and healthcare facilities, while 89.3 million children face heatwaves, and 66.9 million are exposed to riverine floods.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These hazards often overlap or occur in quick succession, reducing recovery time for families and increasing long-term vulnerability.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Health, Nutrition and Environmental Risks<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report highlights severe environmental health risks linked with climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nearly 421 million children (about 99%) are exposed to unhealthy air pollution levels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with India receiving an air pollution risk score of 9.94 out of 10, indicating extremely high exposure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>About 294.1 million children live in malaria-prone areas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, showing how climate conditions are expanding disease risks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Droughts and floods also damage crops, disrupt food systems and worsen malnutrition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially when nearly 40% of children already live in severe food poverty.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The report gives India a food poverty score of 6.31, a nutrition risk score of 6.41, and a stunting score of 6.51, reflecting high vulnerability.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Education Disruptions Due to Climate Change<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Climate change<\/strong><\/a> is increasingly disrupting schooling in India.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>In 2024, 54.78 million students in India were affected by climate-related school disruptions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with heatwaves being the main cause.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent examples include school closures in Odisha, revised school timings in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, and temporary shutdowns in Jharkhand and Uttarakhand due to extreme heat conditions reaching 42\u00b0C\u201345\u00b0C.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Water, Sanitation and Social Protection Challenges<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate hazards are also affecting access to safe water and sanitation.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Floods contaminate water sources, while droughts reduce availability, increasing disease risks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report also highlights that <\/span><b>about 48% of children under 15 in India are not covered under social protection programmes,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> making families more vulnerable during climate shocks.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally, it warns that without urgent action, climate change could result in an additional 28 million children suffering from wasting and 40 million from stunting by 2050.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>UNICEF Recommendations<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNICEF calls for placing children at the centre of climate action and strengthening systems to reduce their vulnerability.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It recommends reducing greenhouse gas emissions and accelerating a transition towards renewable energy in line with the 1.5\u00b0C goal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It stresses strengthening climate adaptation and disaster preparedness systems to manage floods, droughts, heatwaves and storms more effectively.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report also calls for making schools, healthcare systems and water infrastructure climate-resilient so that essential services continue during disasters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNICEF further recommends expanding social protection coverage, including emergency cash transfers, to support vulnerable families during climate shocks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, it urges governments to integrate children\u2019s needs into climate policies and climate finance decisions at all levels to ensure inclusive and child-centred climate
