It is the largest of the three (149 m, 6,670 tonnes).\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Stealth&#8217; here means reduced radar and sensor visibility \u2014 not complete invisibility.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Key weapons and systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles, Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) system, MFSTAR radar, sonar, electronic warfare systems, and anti-submarine weapons.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its role is blue-water operations \u2014 fighting far out at sea against both conventional and non-conventional threats.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sister ships in Project 17A include INS Nigiri, Himgiri, Taragiri, Udaygiri, and Vindhyagiri.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>INS Sanshodhak \u2014 The Eye Beneath the Sea<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanshodhak is a Survey Vessel \u2014 Large (SVL). Its job is to <\/span><b>measure and map the sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: water depth, seabed features, navigational routes, port approach channels, and oceanographic data.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is equipped with autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and multi-beam echo sounders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the last ship of the <\/span><b>Sandhayak-class<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> SVLs (contract signed October 2018).\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other three are INS Sandhayak (Feb 2024), INS Nirdeshak (Dec 2024), and INS Ikshak (Nov 2025).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Why it matters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Submarines and warships don&#8217;t operate in empty water. It is an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) of the <\/span><b>Arnala-class<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its weapons: lightweight torpedoes, indigenous anti-submarine rocket launchers, and sonar systems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its role is to detect and destroy submarines in littoral waters \u2014 shallow coastal zones near ports, naval bases, and sea approaches.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coastal waters are especially tricky for sub-detection because fishing boats, merchant vessels, and seabed clutter create a noisy, cluttered acoustic environment.
