


{"id":109254,"date":"2026-06-22T12:54:05","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T07:24:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=109254"},"modified":"2026-06-22T14:25:58","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T08:55:58","slug":"new-species-of-cave-dwelling-micro-snails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/new-species-of-cave-dwelling-micro-snails\/","title":{"rendered":"New Species of Cave-Dwelling Micro Snails"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>New Species of Cave-Dwelling Micro Snails Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers recently discovered two new species of miniature, cave-dwelling micro-snails named Georissa meghalayaensis and Acmella bensoni.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Georissa meghalayaensis and Acmella bensoni<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are two <\/span><b>new species of miniature, cave-dwelling micro-snails.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were discovered deep inside the damp <\/span><b>limestone caves of Northeast India\u2019s Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Georissa meghalayaensis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was discovered at the edge of <\/span><b>Meghalaya&#8217;s Krem Puri cave entrance.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It stands out from its closest relatives due to its <\/span><b>striking orangish-red colour<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and a highly<\/span><b> detailed, mesh-like pattern of ridges covering its tiny shell.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast, its closest known snail cousins typically sport yellowish shells with sharp, widely spaced spiral lines.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Acmella bensoni<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was found clinging to walls deeper inside both the <\/span><b>Krem Puri and Arwah caves of Meghalaya.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This species distinguishes itself from similar snails by having a <\/span><b>smaller, slightly transparent, whitish shell.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It features deeply impressed <\/span><b>grooves between the shell&#8217;s spirals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (whorls) and an incredibly fine, densely packed pattern of tiny ribs that make the shell appear almost smooth.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This shiny little snail was named in honour of <\/span><b>William H.
