{"id":109500,"date":"2026-06-23T13:31:55","date_gmt":"2026-06-23T08:01:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=109500"},"modified":"2026-06-23T13:58:27","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T08:28:27","slug":"blue-swimmer-crab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/blue-swimmer-crab\/","title":{"rendered":"Blue Swimmer Crab"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Blue Swimmer Crab Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIBA), Chennai, has successfully demonstrated Blue Swimmer Crab (Portunus reticulatus) farming technology for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Blue Swimmer Crab<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>brachyuran crab<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Portunidae family.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also known as the <\/span><b>blue crab, blue swimmer crab, blue manna crab and flower crab.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Appearance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is usually recognized by <\/span><b>flat, disc-shaped hind legs, used<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as paddles for swimming, and by the nine spikes or horns along their carapace, on either side of their eyes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Distribution: It is found in <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, China, Japan, <\/span><b>Malaysia, Australia, India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Sweden, Singapore<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India it is distributed all along the <\/span><b>east and west coasts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a <\/span><b>dominant fishery at <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/palk-strait\/\" target=\"_blank\">Palk Bay<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/gulf-of-mannar\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gulf of Mannar<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Characteristics<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They stay <\/span><b>buried under sand or mud most of the time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly during the daytime and winter, which may explain their high tolerance to ammonium (NH4+) and ammonia (NH3).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Diet:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They come out <\/span><b>to feed during high tide on various organisms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as bivalves, fish and, to a lesser extent, macroalgae.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2276781&amp;reg=48&amp;lang=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> <strong>PIB<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Blue Swimmer Crab is a brachyuran crab in the Portunidae family.
