{"id":10954,"date":"2023-05-16T04:09:42","date_gmt":"2023-05-15T22:39:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=10954"},"modified":"2025-03-29T23:41:01","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T18:11:01","slug":"wpi-inflation-rate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wpi-inflation-rate\/","title":{"rendered":"WPI Inflation rate"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Why in News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>According to data released by the <strong>Ministry of Commerce and Industry<\/strong>, INFLATION RATE based on Wholesale Price Index (WPI) fell to a near <strong>three-year low<\/strong> <strong>of (-) 0.92 %<\/strong> in April, slipping into negative territory for the first time in 33 months.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Causes:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>high base effect<\/strong> along with <strong>moderation in global commodity<\/strong> prices reflected in easing of food, fuel and other input costs.<\/li>\n<li>The decline in the WPI inflation rate in April 2023 was primarily contributed by <strong>fall in prices of basic metals, food products, mineral oils<\/strong>, textiles, non-food articles etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What Is a Wholesale Price Index (WPI)?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Wholesale Price Index (WPI) represents <strong>the price of goods at a wholesale stage<\/strong> i.e. goods that are sold in bulk and traded between organizations instead of consumers.<\/li>\n<li>The index has a <strong>total of 697 items<\/strong>, including <strong>Primary Articles<\/strong> (117), <strong>fuel and power<\/strong> (16), and <strong>Manufactured Products<\/strong> (564).<\/li>\n<li>The percentage increase in WPI over a year gives the rate of inflation for that year.<\/li>\n<li>Currently, the <strong>base year<\/strong> of WPI is<strong> 2011-12.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>WPI is used as an important <strong>measure of inflation in India<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is A Base Year?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The inflation rate is calculated based on indices \u2014 WPI and CPI. The indices are set to 100 in a particular year and the year is the base year.<\/li>\n<li>For instance, a basket of goods was Rs 2 lakh in the base year and the index is set as 100 in that year. Now, if the price of the basket increases to Rs 2.2 lakh in the next year, the index will change to 110 that year.
