From ancient monuments and archaeological sites to manuscripts, languages, literature, and living traditions, India\u2019s heritage reflects thousands of years of civilisational continuity. Recognising its importance, the Constitution provides both moral and policy guidance for heritage conservation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><b>Article 51A(f)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> places a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/fundamental-duties\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Fundamental Duty<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on every citizen to value and preserve the rich heritage of India\u2019s composite culture.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Article 49<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> directs the State to protect monuments, places, and objects of artistic or historic importance from destruction, removal, or neglect.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guided by these constitutional principles, the Government of India has undertaken a wide range of initiatives to protect, restore, digitise, and promote the country\u2019s cultural legacy for future generations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Government\u2019s Initiatives to Promote India\u2019s Rich Cultural Heritage<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has undertaken a wide range of initiatives to protect, conserve, and promote its rich cultural and natural heritage. These efforts combine legal protection, international cooperation, digital innovation, and public participation to ensure that heritage is preserved and also made accessible for future generations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Retrieval of Antiquities<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has made significant efforts to reclaim cultural artefacts that were taken abroad during the colonial period or through illegal trafficking. These efforts not only restore lost heritage but also strengthen India\u2019s cultural sovereignty.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Government has successfully retrieved 655 antiquities from foreign countries between 1976 and 2024.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A major acceleration has been seen in recent years, with 642 antiquities returned since 2014 alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May 2026, the rare <\/span><b>Anaimangalam Copper Plates of the Chola Empire<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were formally returned to India by Leiden University in the Netherlands. These 11th-century copper plates contain valuable Tamil and Sanskrit inscriptions detailing royal land grants, administration, and diplomatic relations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India also secured the return of the sacred <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/piprahwa-relics\/\" target=\"_blank\">Piprahwa Buddha Relics<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, originally discovered in 1898 in present-day Uttar Pradesh and taken overseas during the colonial era. The relics were recently brought back after intervention in an international auction in Hong Kong.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These recoveries not only preserve historical artefacts but also reconnect present generations with India\u2019s civilisational legacy and cultural memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Adopt a Heritage Scheme\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adopt a Heritage Scheme<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a public-private partnership model aimed at improving visitor experience at heritage sites while ensuring their preservation.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched in 2017 and upgraded as <\/span><b>Adopt a Heritage 2.0 in 2023<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the scheme encourages private and public organisations to adopt monuments for development.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CSR funds are used to provide facilities such as lighting, signage, cleanliness, and accessibility improvements at protected sites.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, 21 MoUs have been signed with various organisations across states, marking growing participation in heritage conservation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Hosting of 46th World Heritage Committee Session<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s growing role in global heritage governance was highlighted through the successful hosting of the <\/span><b>46th Session of the World Heritage Committee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in New Delhi from 21\u201331 July 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The session was inaugurated by the Prime Minister.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was attended by nearly 2,900 delegates from more than 140 countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event served as an important platform for discussions on the protection of cultural, natural, and mixed heritage sites.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Monuments of National Importance and Infrastructure Development<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Archaeological Survey of India ensures the protection and maintenance of nationally significant monuments across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>India has 3,697 ancient monuments and archaeological sites declared as nationally important.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASI is responsible for their conservation, scientific restoration, and maintenance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visitor amenities such as pathways, signage, benches, accessibility features, sound and light shows, and basic facilities are also developed to enhance public engagement.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Revival of Heritage Sites<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conservation has now expanded beyond protection into heritage-led urban and pilgrimage development.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Kashi Vishwanath Corridor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has transformed pilgrim access and urban design around a sacred site.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mahakaal Lok in Ujjain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has created a culturally rich spiritual corridor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Kamakhya Corridor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Somnath redevelopment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> enhance infrastructure while preserving religious identity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Kartarpur Corridor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> improves cross-border access to Sikh heritage sites.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This reflects a shift from isolated conservation to integrated cultural infrastructure development.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Must See Portal by ASI<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Archaeological Survey of India has developed a digital platform to promote awareness and tourism of key heritage sites.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>\u201cMust See Monuments and Archaeological Sites of India\u201d portal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highlights around 100 important monuments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It includes World Heritage Sites and UNESCO Tentative List properties.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The portal provides historical background, access information, visitor facilities, and panoramic visuals for better public engagement.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Digitisation of Cultural Heritage<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is increasingly using digital technologies to document, preserve, and promote its vast cultural heritage for research, education, and public access.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities (NMMA) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has documented over 12.3 lakh antiquities and 11,406 heritage sites, creating an extensive database for conservation and research.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Indian Heritage in Digital Space (IHDS) initiative<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> promotes digital preservation through technologies such as virtual mapping, 3D documentation, and immersive heritage experiences.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To safeguard India\u2019s manuscript wealth, the Government launched the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/gyan-bharatam-mission-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gyan Bharatam Mission<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2025.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mission aims to survey, digitise, document, and conserve more than one crore manuscripts spread across libraries, temples, monasteries, museums, and private collections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By preserving ancient texts related to philosophy, science, medicine, literature, and religion, the mission seeks to protect India\u2019s knowledge traditions for future generations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Promotion of Classical Languages<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s heritage conservation approach also includes protection of linguistic and literary traditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 3 October 2024, the Government granted classical language status to <\/span><b>Assamese, Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, and Bengali, increasing the total to 11 classical languages.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This recognition supports preservation of ancient texts, oral traditions, and linguistic diversity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It reinforces India\u2019s commitment to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Modernising Heritage Experience through Museums<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is also transforming how heritage is experienced by citizens and visitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Archaeological Experiential Museum in Vadnagar (2025)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> presents 2,500 years of history through immersive displays and excavation-based storytelling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Humayun\u2019s Tomb Museum (2024) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">showcases Mughal architecture and conservation history in a modern format.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These initiatives shift heritage from static display to interactive learning and public engagement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Global Recognition of Literary Heritage<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s cultural heritage also extends to literary traditions that have received global recognition.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2024, three important Indian texts &#8211; <\/span><b>Ramcharitmanas, Panchatantra, and Sahrday\u0101loka-Locana<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, were included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific (MOWCAP) Register.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This recognition highlights India\u2019s rich intellectual and literary traditions and strengthens India\u2019s position in global cultural heritage discourse.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Read about
