Around 50 people have died.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France recorded its hottest day since record-keeping began in 1947 \u2014 hitting 44.3\u00b0C. Schools shut, public transport was disrupted, and air-conditioned cinemas and museums were opened as emergency shelters.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forty people drowned in France alone after seeking relief in unsupervised water bodies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What Is Causing This Heat? The Omega Block<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The immediate cause of the heatwave is a meteorological phenomenon called the <\/span><b>Omega Block<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 named because the resulting air pressure pattern resembles the Greek letter \u03a9.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Normally, jet streams \u2014 high-altitude winds \u2014 blow steadily from west to east over Europe, moving weather systems along.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When this flow gets disrupted, it develops large bends. A high-pressure zone builds in the middle, flanked by low-pressure zones on either side. This creates the omega shape.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This high-pressure zone acts like a lid over the land. Warm air rising from the ground cannot escape into the upper atmosphere.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It gets trapped near the surface and keeps heating up further. The result is prolonged, intense heat with no relief.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This phenomenon is also called a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-a-heat-dome\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Heat Dome<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Its effects include suppressed cloud formation, no rainfall, prolonged sunshine, and rising temperatures through compressional heating \u2014 where sinking air heats up as it is compressed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Why Is Europe Warming So Fast<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Omega Block is an immediate trigger, but Europe&#8217;s deeper vulnerability is structural. The Arctic \u2014 the only region warming faster than Europe \u2014 is losing its bright white glacial ice rapidly. The darker Arctic Ocean water that replaces it absorbs heat instead of reflecting it, warming the surrounding region including northern Europe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fracking and Fossil Fuel Activity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 Continued extraction of oil and gas contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, further accelerating warming.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Why Is Europe So Badly Hit Despite &#8220;Only&#8221; 40\u00b0C<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many parts of the world \u2014 including large parts of India \u2014 routinely experience temperatures above 40\u00b0C and continue to function.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Europe&#8217;s vulnerability at the same temperature reveals a <\/span><b>structural mismatch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between its climate history and its current climate reality.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Infrastructure Built for Cold, Not Heat<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European homes \u2014 particularly in western Europe \u2014 were designed historically to retain heat during cold winters.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They use thick stone, brick, and concrete \u2014 materials with high thermal mass that absorb and slowly release heat.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In summer, these same walls trap heat indoors, turning homes into ovens.
