It is globally recognized for its thriving blackbuck population, significant Indian wolf habitat, and one of the world\u2019s largest roosting sites for migratory harriers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Blackbuck National Park Historical Background<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The area was originally maintained as a royal grassland reserve by the <\/span><b>Maharaja of Bhavnagar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who used it for hunting blackbucks with trained cheetahs. Recognising its ecological value, the <\/span><b>government declared it a wildlife sanctuary <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>later expanded it into a national park in July 1976<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Today, it is regarded as one of India\u2019s finest examples of grassland conservation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Blackbuck National Park Location and Geographical Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blackbuck National Park is situated at <\/span><b>Velavadar in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat, about 45 km from Bhavnagar city.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It lies in the <\/span><b>Bhal region of Saurashtra<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, near the <\/span><b>Gulf of Khambhat (Cambay)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The seasonal <\/span><b>Parvalia and Alang rivers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> flow through the landscape, with the Alang River forming the southern boundary of the park.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It falls within the <\/span><b>semi-arid biogeographic zone <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and represents the <\/span><b>Gujarat-Rajwada biotic province.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The northern portion consists of <\/span><b>open grasslands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while the southern region contains <\/span><b>thorn scrub, saline flats, and tidal mudflats.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Blackbuck National Park Faunal Diversity<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Park is renowned for its rich wildlife diversity and serves as an important refuge for grassland mammals, carnivores, and migratory birds.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The park supports one of the largest and healthiest blackbuck populations in India; the species can run at speeds of nearly 80 km\/h and is <\/span><b>protected under Schedule I of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wildlife-protection-act\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Indian Wolf<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Velavadar holds one of the most significant wolf populations among Indian protected areas, with the southern thorn-scrub region serving as an important breeding and denning habitat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lesser Florican<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: This Critically Endangered grassland bird visits the park during the monsoon breeding season, making Velavadar one of its most important habitats in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Other Mammals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Nilgai, Striped Hyena, Golden Jackal, Indian Fox, Jungle Cat and Wild Boar are commonly found in the park.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avifauna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Flamingoes, Pelicans, Painted Storks, White Storks and large numbers of migratory Harriers use the park and adjoining wetlands as feeding and roosting grounds.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Blackbuck National Park Floral Diversity<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flora of Blackbuck National Park reflects its unique semi-arid grassland ecosystem and plays a crucial role in sustaining the park\u2019s rich wildlife population.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Blackbuck National Park<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is dominated by <\/span><b>tropical grasslands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that provide ideal habitat and food for blackbucks and other herbivores.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vegetation mainly consists of grasses such as <\/span><b>Dichanthium annulatum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which forms an important part of the blackbuck\u2019s diet.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tree species like Babul (Acacia), Karanj, Banyan, and Jambu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occur in scattered patches and provide shelter and nesting sites for wildlife.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The southern part of the park contains <\/span><b>thorn-scrub vegetation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which serves as an important habitat for <\/span><b>Indian wolves and other carnivores.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the saline conditions influenced by the nearby Gulf of Khambhat, <\/span><b>salt-tolerant plant species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also found in some
