text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It spans over the Western Ghats in the Belgaum district of <\/span><b>Karnataka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is spread across an area of 190 sq.km.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sanctuary has been named after the <\/span><b>Bhimgad For<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t, <\/span><b>constructed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the <\/span><b>17th century <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as a strategic outpost to <\/span><b>guard against Portuguese expansion from Goa.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It shares its <\/span><b>boundary <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the north of <\/span><b>Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> north-west of the <\/span><b>Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Mollem National Park<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, north of <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/netravali-wildlife-sanctuary\/\" target=\"_blank\">Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary<\/a>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and east of <\/span><b>Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BWS forms the <\/span><b>headwaters <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of a number of rivers like <\/span><b>Tillari, Malaprabha, and Mhadei <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and several perennial streams.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sanctuary is most <\/span><b>famous for the Barapede Caves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>only known breeding ground <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the <\/span><b>Wroughton\u2019s Free-tailed Bat, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a threatened species on the<\/span><b> verge of extinction.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vegetation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The dominant vegetation of the forest comprises <\/span><b>tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Flora<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forests are dominated by towering trees like <\/span><b>Malabar teak, rosewood,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and various species of dipterocarps<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also hosts a number of <\/span><b>medicinal plants.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fauna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
